A sneaky look at my latest purchase

My latest new-to-me 60s clothes arrived yesterday - a matching skirt and top. This isn't my first 60s new-old-stock, but it is the first that will fit, so I'm going to have to remove this tag.

I don't know if it's the same firm, but there's a European fabric company called Klopman that makes workwear fabrics nowadays. However, a quick Google turned up loads of attractive 1960s-1970s fabrics made by Klopman. The 'Lean on' slogan seems to have been one they used a lot in the early 1960s. And yeah, polyester. It's woven, though, not knitted. I'm still not prepared to go there on the knitted stuff. This fabric has a pleasing silky feel.

At the bottom of the photo you can just see the diamante button at the scarf neckline on the top. Isn't it cute? And restrained. Just the right amount of glitz in just the right place. The fabric pattern is quite busy, but the button has enough sparkle to stand out. Diamante earrings with this one, I reckon, no brooch needed.

As well as going with its skirt, I reckon the top will also look ace with black trousers or a black pencil skirt. That's one of the reasons I bought the set; I thought it would be more versatile than just a dress. Not sure what I'd wear the skirt with, but something will come up.

I bought my suit from TBBVintage on Etsy. That's short for Two Big Blondes; plus-size is their speciality. They're currently selling a plus size 1940s Jacques Fath. Woah. Anyhow, my purchase was nowhere near as expensive as that covetable outfit, though I did get hit by the dreaded customs charges. (I don't mind the customs charges so much as the Post Office handling fee - they were going to deliver it anyway, so I don't see why they have to whack another £8 on top.)

With that and my lovely crimplene suit from Kinky Melon, September has been a great shopping month!

  2. That suit is lovely, Mim and from the fabric pattern as well as the label, I'd guess it's early 1960s indeed. Dacron polyester was developed in the 1950s. I'm guessing you will be getting good use out of both pieces. Well done on finding such a treasure! xxx

    1. Aha, that is very interesting.

I like the early 60s look - not as 'waisty' as the 1950s, but still quite ladylike. Though the fun of the later 60s has its own appeal.

  3. If I'd seen that suit out and about, I'd have thought, 'hmmm, I could see Mim in that.' Perfect choice. Love the diamantƩ button. It's the secretary-takes-her-glasses-off moment of that suit. Saucy. I love watching people nail down their style. Found some great cable knit cream tights yesterday if you need some to go with this.

    1. I think I have some - Primark did them last year. (Primark are so frustrating; the quality of their tights sucks, but the range is fab.)

  4. Ooh, I like that set!

I would think the skirt could be worn with a twinset, or an over-sized chunky polo neck for a more casual look. I second the cable tights suggestion, and add mustard yellow.

I don't dare click that link ("Must...Not...Click") because I'm not sure I could resist the Fath.

    1. Polo neck is a good suggestion. Cable tights would work well as the fabric is quite thin on this set, so the tights would add warmth.

  5. Perfect!
The fabric-tie makes all the difference. It can be left hanging, it can become a bow.. it can be even wrapped and pinned around the neckline. Great choice.
I'm sure you will love it!
(do not regret buying it even for a second)

    1. It's actually a fake tie so can only really stay in its place. I was surprised by that!

  6. Oooh, that Jacques Fath dress is stupendous!
That is one glorious suit, very Mim! I love the blingy button and that groovy swing tag. I could see red accessories looking really good with it. xxx

    1. It's a really nice suit. I found a date on the original tags - it's from 1964.

  7. That is a lovely suit Mim - and apparently skirt suits are very on trend this year - like you care!

I think the diamante detail is beautiful and I love the pattern. Can't wait to see you style the suit - because its monochrome any colour would go with it.

    Have a fab weekend

    1. The diamante comes off, presumably for washing - which means I can attach other pins instead if I want. (Gonzo as Dath Vader...)

    1. I really love it. One of those lucky times when the item and the price are both right. Oh, and the size. I get that right less often than the item and price...

  11. That suit looks just like your style. What a fabulous find. It has lovely material and that is so useful that it is a two-piece. It is getting really hard to find plus-size vintage, even the sewing patterns. I had a look at that shop. The Jaques Fath is gorgeous and they have some lovely brooches. Thanks for sharing about them. Xx

    1. Yes, finding plus-size vintage is a sod. It is out there, though usually in America! I do like the styles of original vintage better than repro, as repro tends to focus on the younger and more pin-up ends of the market, so for me original is still the best option.
