A night on the tiles

I had been thinking of going to Vintage Sunday today (part of Bath in Fashion week) but didn't think anyone else was going, and also I had WORK to do.

Yup, we've had our new bathroom put in this week. Dan the Plumber has done an ace job, and the new suite is in and the tiles are on the wall. The tiles are 'Hoxton' (awful name - hipster tiles!) from The Bath Store. Our house has a sort of 'Victorian Explorer' vibe, and I'd hoped for either an American southwestern or southern Spanish/Moroccan look. These tiles are more Victorian in feel, but they do fit in with the rest of our home in general.

We ordered the tiles and three days later they were out of stock, so they're clearly popular. Annoyingly the plain ones are slightly larger than the patterned ones, which caused a few problems with putting them up. We did have fun working out a pattern though.
The patterned tiles came with three of each design in a box of 12, so we had to work out a mix and match pattern.

Dan is going to do a proper tiled surround for the bath tomorrow, and Mr Robot and I took the chance to repaint the room today. Our bathroom is a good size, and very well lit, so we used a strong colour. Once the bath surround is in, we'll sand the floor, skirting boards and door and varnish them a dark colour for a Spanish feel.

  1. Oooohhhhh! Mim, they are absolutely lovely. What glorious colours, they go so well with your wall and look so lovely. No wonder they were sold out. Doesn't this weather/stronger light just make you want to clean/decorate, etc? I love your Victorian Explorer vibe. It is very retronaut. :) Looks amazing, you have fabulous taste. Xx

    1. Thank you! I really like them. When we were laying them out in patterns on the floor I did briefly wonder if we'd made the right choice, but now they're up I love them. The wall feels a little *too* orange, but it's growing on me.

  2. How exciting! I love that photo of you, it expresses the joys and perils of DIY all in one. I didn't end up going to Bath, we needed a quiet day. Your bathroom is going to look fab, the colours and tiles are really lovely xx

    1. I'm not awful at painting, but I prefer to leave more complex DIY to the pros. Pete and I built our shed, and it's a right rickety thing.

  3. Those tiles are really beautiful Mim, and I love the wall colour. Can't wait to see the end result. xxx

    1. Me neither - timekeeping is NOT the plumber's strong point and it's still not finished.

    Have a great week!

    1. I'm not sure if the wall isn't too orange - we tried to redo the terracotta that was there before, but it's come out orange - though it is starting to grow on me. The room is large and sunny enough to take a bright colour.

  6. Absolutely smashing!
As I've said it,a s soon as I found out you are giving your bathroom a make-up & remodeling, this will bring you pleasure, and it will bring you pain. Re-modeling a house is a masochistic deal; so to say.
    Yours looks great.
No, honestly, those "patchwork" tiles are gorgeous.
Stay strong, brave out the tedious day and try to cope with all the compromising yo're making. It's well worth it.

    1. Happily, the plumber is doing all the difficult stuff. Though we had water from the shower coming through the kitchen ceiling this morning; I think the shower needs sealing again!

  7. It's looking fabulous so far! Can't wait to see the finished thing. On a side note, I would've gone to the Vintage Sunday with you. I wasn't aware it was on, so next time just give me a shout! x

    1. I think it was fairly low-key this year. Previous Bath in Fashion weeks have been bigger affairs, I don't know why they didn't publicise it more this year. Or perhaps I just missed the publicity. I'm being rubbish at going places this year.

  8. They are fabulous! I love them. I've got a collection of Victorian encaustic tiles we've been meaning to tile around the bathroom sink with, your modern ones would make a brilliant addition if we need more. xxx

    1. I don't think they would completely work with encaustic tiles as these are surface-decorated rather than the design being embedded in them, but they are pretty. The similarity of design to encaustic ones was what attracted me to them.

  9. I think it looks fabulous. I love colour and pattern (and quirkiness) in bathrooms, can't be doing with cold stark white.

    1. White just doesn't grab me, and there's so much light in our bathroom it'd burn my retinas out if it were white!

  10. Those tiles are gorgeous and look smashing in your bathroom, I also love the warm shade you have chosen so much nicer than boring old white, its going to be so cozy once you have finished! xx

  11. Gorgeous tiles! A good distraction from the white suite. My sun has bunny times on her kitchen and I covet them so! xx

  12. What a charming first photo. :) How exciting that things are shaping up for you guys on the bathroom front. It's very exciting to see and read about your home decorating progress here. I've always had a real passion for interior design and DIY jobs (so much so that - little known fact here - I strongly debated launching a blog about such, instead of vintage, when I began CV back in 2009; ultimately I'm very glad that I went with vintage, but I'm sure I'd have been happy either way), so these posts are right up my alley.

    Big hugs,
    ♥ Jessica
