More than a feeling...

Boston! Boston Spa, to be precise. That's the pattern of these plates. Back in June 2015 Mr Robot and I found a set of six dinner plates in a chazza, and were very pleased with our bargain. This weekend I found myself unexpectedly getting this little lot to go with it, thereby proving Vix's maxim that if you wait long enough, everything turns up in a charity shop.

How do you unexpectedly buy six cups and saucers, six tea plates, six bowls and a jug? Well, I was supposed to be going to work because of DEADLINE HELL. The plan was I'd go in, do a few hours extra in the office - we don't work Saturdays, but the building is open for people who need to go in - and then do a spot of Christmas shopping. On my way to the station I popped into the local hospice clearance chazza. All the stuff that doesn't sell in the regular shops within a certain time ends up there there. The chances of finding vintage clothes is pretty much nonexistent, but it can be a good source of basics. I nabbed myself a couple of long-sleeved T-shirts (one Seasalt organic cotton, one M&S) and a wool brocade skirt (Phase 8) for £6 so felt pretty chuffed, and spotted the china in a cabinet.

This is where the story should end. But the Christmas Market is on in Bath, and I couldn't get on FOUR TRAINS IN A ROW because of overcrowding. People were literally pressed right up to the doors. This wasn't good, and didn't bode well for getting home again either, so I decided Fate didn't want me to go to work, and went home to fire up the PlayStation and bash some monsters to relieve some stress. And I told Mr Robot about the pottery, and he said we should go and take a look. You know what that means: we were going to get it. So we did. I'm dead chuffed; putting it all together we've now got six place settings (and a jug) for less than £25.
That's not the only thing I've bought lately. I added another Christmas house to my collection. Yeah, they're twee, but I like them. There's a stall that sells them at the Christmas market. They had one that was all half-timbered in style, a copy of a real house in Chester, but I stuck to my 'pointy fairytale houses' theme.

And in case you're wondering about deadlines, Mag One went yesterday, on time (hoorah!) and Mag Two goes tomorrow, and it will go on time, oh yes.

Cheers!

  1. Cheers!!
Love your Boston Spa collection, how lucky were you, snaffling that lot in a charity shop clearance place? I do find a fair bit of vintage in ours, I think a lot of the stuff ends up there as it's been so stupidly overpriced in another shop and just hasn't sold.
Your train journey sounds like hell. I'm so glad I don't have to endure the Walsall to Birmingham commute any more. xxx

    1. Interestingly, when I was in they had a woman come in who was clearly a jewellery expert they get to go through their jewellery, so I suspect they have people picking out the good stuff. Might be why I almost never see vintage clothes; they're probably all being sent off to a specialist shop.

I don't travel by train to work every day, thank goodness - we started going by car because Great Western were so incompetent, and it turned out cheaper too. We only usually get the train if Pete wants to do something involving alcohol, or I'm on my own. (I can't drive.)

  2. Your commute sounds even worse than mine. A lot worse, actually! But well done on finding that amazing lot of Boston Spa. What a bargain! Twee or not, I quite love your pointy fairy tale houses, too. Nothing wrong with a bit of tweeness at Christmas. Well done on meeting those pesky deadlines! xxx

    1. I do love my little houses. I like the cosiness and sentimentality of Christmas.

It's ridiculous the amount of nice china we find in charity shops. We do have far too much now, but it's so hard to pass by.

  3. Commuting by train is a nightmare. I am glad that I don't do it any more. Trains were late at least one way nearly every day. Sometimes both. I am really glad that you managed your deadline and got some time to your self. Definitely deadline time of year. Your china is fabulous. What a lovely find and a very nice pattern. Hope the next deadline goes a lot more smoothly than this one. Xx

    1. One more deader and then Christmas! I don't have to get the train often, thank goodness. Loads of people are in late today because the snow has borked things.

  4. Mim, are you a little bit pi**ed in the final photo? If so, I bet it's relief at meeting those deadlines and well done you!

I love your little fairy houses.

What a bargain your set of Boston Spa was and how elegant, too. I love the sound of a brocade wool skirt!

    1. Ha, no, I think I'm just slightly stunned with relief at one deadline being over. A little bit pissed came later :-D

The wool skirt is fab, it's my favourite thing I've found in ages. So warm and really cheery.

  5. The train situation sounds horrible, but yay for completing your set of china. My sister collected little houses like that-seeing them all on display at Christmas was impressive. Not sure which of her kids ended up with them as it required quite a bit of space to display.
I'm glad your deadlines are done now and you can enjoy the rest of the month's festivities.

    1. Yeah, we think we'll stop at three Christmas houses or they'll start taking up too much room. Pete also says I have enough kitsch animals on the Christmas tree, but I'm not sure it's actually possible to have enough kitsch animals.

  6. Hooray for deadlines being met! What a beautiful set of dishware! Love your pointy fairy homes collection too. Commuting by train still sounds better than sitting on the freeway in my native California.

    1. I have workmates stranded in LA right now, funnily enough - I think it's due to the snow here rather than the fires there; luckily they're out there with Sony (the company), who will take good care of them.

  7. Oh the train horror I do hate this time of year. Well done you on the tea set and on meeting those deadlines, I do hope you get some down time now you have most definitely earned it. xx

  8. Hello!
I'm so glad that you have managed the deadlines in time! Oh, yeah... such a great feeling to get that done, makes your back feel lighter, right?
That aside, I see you've got a whole new tea set, ah? Never mind, you will surely use it (they look adorable, "Boston Spa" sounds so posh!) :D

Are you counting days 'till holidays?
Is the Christmas tree still up - or have the munchkins managed to tear it down? :D

    Hugs!
    Marija
