Miss Fisher: the psychedelic years

So, we’ve a little news on the Miss Fisher front. First, the movie is going ahead! Last September I blogged about the makers of the show putting together a Kickstarter for a Phryne movie, and Screen Australia has reported that Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears will begin filming in Melbourne and Morocco this October. There’s been a real dearth of Jazz Age crime on telly in recent years, so I for one welcome that. And I know I’m not alone as the crowdfunding and money from private investors raised a million Australian dollars. There’s no release date so far.

So what will be on television now Phryne’s making the move to movies? How about a 60s-set programme called Ms Fisher’s MODern Murder Mysteries, with the central character being Miss Fisher’s niece Peregrine? Spyvibe reported on that a couple of days ago. On Every Cloud Productions' website we’re promised a stylish apartment, sports car and ‘cutting-edge wardrobe’. As for the setting, that's Melbourne, which should be interesting - I've not seen much on Australia in the 1960s.

I have to say, I have my doubts about the 60s-set programme for a few reasons, and it’s very silly of me to have those doubts because they’re exactly the charges that could be laid at the Miss Fisher one: inaccurate costuming, anachronism, and overall silliness. Indeed, Murdoch Mysteries is guilty of all those things by the bucketload, and that’s one of my favourites. Or should I say ‘was’ one of my favourites? Thanks to Virgin dropping the Alibi channel from its programming, I’ve no idea if I’ll ever see it or Miss Fisher again, or get the chance to watch the new show. So perhaps my worries are even more daft as I may never even have the opportunity to decide for myself! Fingers crossed it will be less disappointing than the really rather inadequate Frankie Drake, which even I couldn't bring myself to continue watching...

Do you have any vintage-set TV recommendations for me? Or are you, like me, finding it's pretty thin fare right now?

    1. Oh, cool! Virgin and UKTV seem to have sorted out their quarrel and Alibi's back, so I'm a happy bunny.

    1. It's not the greatest TV series of all time, but it is one of those shows I love to watch just because it's pretty and funny and the bad always get caught in the end...

  3. I love your psychedelic '60s idea although I wasn't at all struck on the series.
I know the 1980s aren't the era of choice for either of us but have you seen cold war thriller series Deutschland 83 on All 4? Aside from the cracking plot the cinematography, soundtrack and costumes are excellent and it won a heap of awards. xxxx

    1. I started watching Deutschland 84 and then fell out of it - I think that was when it was on the main Channel 4. If I get time I'll give it another go, though I have - SHOCK! - been watching less telly lately.
