Uranium glass dessert bowl set

Five small green art deco uranium glass dessert bowls and one large matching serving dish.
You know when you promise yourself you're not going to get any more of something – you have enough – and then you see one you've just got to have? For some people it's bags, for others it's shoes, some people might accumulate tools or CDs or pottery frogs. For us it's plates and other food-serving items. And when we saw this uranium glass dessert set in a charity shop yesterday we just had to have it. Usually one or the other of us will be sensible enough to put on the brakes, but each of us was prepared to find all sorts of reasons why we should hand over £15 and take the bowls home. So we did.

Art deco glass and china in a dark wooden sideboard. There's one big bowl and five of the smaller ones, so probably it was originally a big bowl and set of six dishes. However, as our table only seats four anyhow, five will do nicely. It means we've a set of four plus a spare small bowl in case of accidents. Mr Robot pointed out that the green colour might make certain desserts look a bit odd, but I'm prepared to risk it.

After a bit of juggling other things I was able to fit it into the sideboard. It goes jolly nicely with my art deco teaware, though possibly not quite so well with my giant Splat cups! And now we really must not buy any more plates or bowls...

  1. Hi Mim, I think that they are really gorgeous. What a beautiful colour. You definitely have to buy things when you see them, especially in the chazzas. They were an utter bargain. For me it is fabric, but you know that. Although I was on a bit of a spree on Ebay today and just emptied my basket. No more until I finish things off. :) Xx

    1. I almost never find sewing fabric, though I do keep looking. I think the lady in the charity shop really liked these, she seemed dead keen for them to go to a good home.

    1. Now I have to make puddings to go in the big bowl. That'll do my weight reduction plan *loads* of good...

  3. They are fabulous! I too have had a purchase ban in place on crockery. The odd one still sneaks through... Mint choc chip ice-cream would be set off nicely in those.

    1. Nice idea! All I could think of was trifle, though I might see if there's anything fun and retro in Fun With Food.

  4. For a set that nice, £15 well spent. That's the thing with charity shopping you do have to get things when you see them, otherwise they're gone when you go back.

    1. Yup. I usually tell myself, 'If it's meant to be yours, it'll be here if you go away and come back," but neither of us were prepared to take the chance on this one. It's the same chazza where I got my 1930s drinking glasses, I do quite well there.

  5. I'm a sucker for green Depression glass also (I have a large bowl and footed plate). This is a good time to be buying dishes as younger kids don't want the family stuff. I keep various sets packed in boxes and change them out with the seasons like clothing. Yes, it takes up room but you can always list the pieces on ebay if you get tired of them.

Mr. Robot has a point-chocolate will look terrible in green dishes but chocolate is overrated ;)
Congratulations on finding such a beautiful set.

    1. I'm not one for chocolate-based puds either. Lemon is probably my favourite flavour for sweet things. Lemon things would look perfect in those dishes...

If I had a larger house, I'd amass crockery by the crateload.

  6. Ooo those are pretty! So Spring-y! Ant pink or raspberry desert would look fab in them!

    1. Pink would look very 1960s to my mind... and that's a good thing!

  7. These are beautiful! I would have wanted them too. I am still yearning for the inky dinky pink glass coffee set I saw, but Andy isn’t keen for me to buy any more glass until I can display it properly. Pooh.

  10. Mine is jewellery, Mim. I just can't resist it - and it's usually pretty cheap...

I love your glass dishes - I bet jelly will look and taste fantastic in them!
