Merry Christmas!

He's quite a cute little goblin really.
Um, yeah, it's the 29th, so I've left this a bit late. But I have been checking in on everyone's blogs and Instagrams, time permitting. It looks like everyone's been having a good time, which is nice.

Just before Christmas - we drove up on the 23rd, came back on the 24th - we went to Norfolk to see my mum and Brian. My godparents were there, and my brother, his girlfriend and my nephew Harry. Harry's one now, which coincidentally is the sum total of his vocabulary. All he can say is 'cat!' As Mr Robot isn't fond of children, Harry immediately latched onto him, and spent the next few hours repeatedly shouting 'cat!' at him and handing him oranges. Every time the oranges went back in the bowl, Harry would return them to Mr Robot. It was a fun time, and I was glad to see my mum after she nearly died of pneumonia earlier this year.

We had a quiet Christmas, just the two of us with no visitors. We haven't even eaten as much as we usually do. We had a slap up Christmas dinner - prawn cocktail followed by turkey with all the trimmings - but really couldn't face pudding so just nibbled at the cheese board. The cats had a little plate of turkey each, but as you can see Pippin also fancied a bit of cheese. (She didn't get any. Later on we heard a clattering from the kitchen and discovered her trying to take the tinfoil off the rest of the turkey, the little git. Ziggy, as always, was a Good Boy.)
O hai. I'm from the Cheese Inspection Board...
I wore my Lindy Bop witch doctor dress, which isn't exactly seasonal, but it's comfy and rather smarter than everything else I've dossed around in. It's been repro 1930s beach pyjamas for the past couple of days. I've had a stinker of a cold, that's my excuse for being a slob. And a new PS4 game and a slew of old films I want to watch. I'm glad I got the cold before going back to Norfolk; there's no way I'd want to pass it on to Mum.

In case you're wondering about presents, very little was vintage, though Mr Robot did treat me to a bottle of Caron Narcisse Noir parfum, and my brother got me some Universal monster movies on DVD. Mr Robot also got me a beautiful eel leather handbag - modern, but in the boxy shape I love - and an emerald necklace, so I was very spoiled. Because I like the 1950s song 'I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas' he gave me a box of Kinder Happy Hippo biscuits, and I got Freddos (chocolate frogs) and a bag of jelly snakes from the cats to make up for the real frogs and slow worms they've been bringing us all year.

It's nice having the time to spend at home. I don't really want to go out at the mo - can anything be more hellish than the sales? My office doesn't reopen till the 2nd, but the Mr has to work between Christmas and New Year and says Bath is heaving. He got himself a very nice checked suit, so I suppose the sales have some merit, but I'm still not getting on a train to fight my way through crowds. It's not like there's anything I need anyhow, not as much as a good rest. Have you been out to the sales, relaxing at home, or have you had to go back to work already? Whichever it is, I hope this period has still been a pleasant one full of good cheer for you!

  1. It sounds like you had a smashing time. That naughty Pippin robbing the turkey! Frank's a little cheese monkey, I swear he can smell it from the top of the garden.
Your pressies from Mr Robot sound wonderful, dying to see that bag. His checked suit sounds rather cool.
Jon's bought a new telly in the sales - not that we entertained the idea of going near the shops, it was bought online. xxx

    1. Pippin gets onto worktops, Ziggy drags stuff out of the bin. Little nightmares!

I went to the shops today, in the hopes of finding navy brogues or loafers. No joy. Not buying anything else; I'm going to lose weight and get into things I already own.

  2. I'm glad to read you've been having a quiet Christmas too! I've spent most of my holidays relaxing at home, and went for a couple of walks when eventually we did have some rather nice weather. I had to go into town, though, as I had a hairdresser's appointment, but was I glad to be back home! And we don't even have sales yet, they're only starting in January here. I love Pippin's little face ;-) Your Lindy Bop does look appropriately festive, and I'm loving the sound of your presents, especially the Happy Hippo biscuits and the chocolate frogs and jelly snakes from the cats! How thoughtful of them, we got nothing from Phoebe! xxx

    1. Pippin has people who really like her on Instagram. I think it's those crossed eyes and chubby cheeks.

Maybe Phoebe needs more pocket money ;-)

  3. I'm glad to hear you had a good Christmas but not that you had a cold. We finally had our Christmas this morning and I promptly smashed my glass and threw buck's fizz all over myself!

    1. Keep it classy, gurl!

I'm dreading the latest flu virus. I get them every damn time. I either want it soon, so I can recover before going to India, or not at all.

  4. I'm glad you had a good Christmas, Mim and your little nephew looks like a sweetie!

I wish all Cheese Inspection Officers had such a cheeky face as the one in your photograph!

We ate less this year too, we still have loads of Quality Street and Celebrations left. They're usually gone by now! We didn't have pudding either so I'm saving the pudding for New Year's Day.

I had some money to spend in the sales and spent it on some perfume and a Perspehone book - both bought online...

    Have a wonderful New Year!

    1. He's a good little boy - really cheery. He's already been out in the tractor helping with the barley harvest, he loved it.

Persephone books are great! They look so good, too, with their grey covers and pretty endpapers.

  5. Kids and animals really delight in torturing those they sense would rather not be bothered. We had a cat that loved to jump in my grandmother's lap just to hear her shriek in horror.
We had a lovely break, and I'm looking forward to doing nothing until next week. I bought myself a WWI era carved jet brooch after Christmas, and a bottle of vintage Antilope, but that's all I've ordered. I have been considering a few dresses at Lindy Bop, but I'll wait until the prices drop a bit more, or I get a coupon, etc.
Glad to hear you were able to see your family, and I hope you're feeling better soon.

    1. I saw that brooch, it is beautiful. A really special piece. I did buy one thing in the sales, and that was a brooch - I mail ordered an Erstwilder 'beckoning cat' brooch.

    1. It's all gone apart from the usual lingering cough. Now awaiting my turn at Aussie flu. I get every blasted flu virus every time they do the rounds.

      Back at work today :-(

  7. I'm glad you had a nice relaxing Christmas. Shame about the cold. I missed all the run up to Christmas because of a horrid cough lurgy. I was back at work on the 28th then two days off and in tomorrow. So a good mix of work and relaxing and knitting time! Happy New Year.

  8. Hope you're getting over the cold and enjoying chilling at home. I was going to pop down to Bath myself, but decided against it, especially after the recent snow the local roads were quite treacherous. Anyway, wishing you and Mr Robot all the best for 2018 xx

    1. I don't think Bath got any snow - we didn't have any in Trowbridge, and there was no snow in Bath when I was in the city for work.

  10. A post full of wee cheeky faces! Your nephew is so cute and looks so happy and full of mischief. Pippin is obviously taking the role of cheese inspector very seriously. That made me laugh about the turkey. I am sure that she was just looking to see that it was still okay too. Your presents sound fabulous, especially the bag. I have done very little, drank lots of beer and eaten my own body-weight in crisps. Back to reality in a couple of days. Here's wishing all the very best to you and Mr Robot for the coming year. May it bring you both joy. Xx

    1. She is a little sod. Her brother has occasional attacks of naughtiness - getting stuff out of the bin is his speciality - but she's by far the more mischievous of the two. She also likes fighting feet in bed. And she starts fights with Ziggy, then starts wailing and hissing when he's winning because he's bigger than her (and too stupid to work out when she's had enough).

Happy new year to you too!
