Dooooo want

A cup of tea and a slice of cake
Grab a cuppa, I'm rambling...
I'm not on deadline, which is usually the time when I go shopping-loopy, but I am hankering for THINGS anyway. (Now I do two magazines, there's a gap of about a week to a week and a half between them going to press.) And for some reason, the things I want are really pricy this time around. My charity shop purchases last weekend have done nothing to contain my covetousness.

First there's this amazing 1960s ensemble from House of Foxy. Look at it! That dress could not be more me in many ways – tweed, short-sleeved, perfect for popping brooches on. But it's £165. Owww. And the colour isn't exactly my colour, and I do worry that it's got too much of a waist for me. (Don't start me on my musings over shapewear; I'm considering getting a waist cincher to wear under certain garments 'cos the gym isn't helping in that department. My body confidence is pretty low right now.) £165 is a lot of money to spend on something that's almost perfect. So I'm probably just going to keep staring at it, and kick myself when it's out of stock in my size. If they bring the same style out in green or blue, I won't be able to hand my money over fast enough.

On the other hand I probably am going to buy this Seamstress dress from Seasalt because it'll be great for my trip to Spain later this summer. I love the print, which really reminds me of jazz age prints. I prefer straight shapes to fuller-skirted ones, but the cut of that one will at least hide my bowling-ball gut. Dress for the body you've got, not the body you want...

I did troll round the sales looking for shoes, but didn't come up with anything. (I even tried going back to Bath's branch of Hotter, but the staff there are rubbish.) I guess I'll wait till the autumn to see what's available then; Kelly mentioned that Solovair are bringing out a ladies' range. If you haven't come across Solovair, they're from the factory that used to make Dt Martens before most production of Docs got outsourced to China. No, not cheap, but extremely high quality, and not made in a sweatshop. (A bit like that House of Foxy dress, then. I think I'll go and stare at that some more. Doooo want...)

Got any WANTS right now?

  1. That Seasalt dress is lovely. I saw the HOF set too, but the colours aren't really 'me' and I don't want it enough to buy it at that price. If budget was limitless I'd be tempted. I've got my eye on loads of things but not a lot in the vintage repro world. I have bought lots of practical things (two pairs of Clarks sandals for hols) as well as a few things for Autumn (velvet trousers from Finery that I can't wait to wear!).

    1. I'm going to keep mulling the dress over. Hopefully by the time I've made a decision, the gym will have done something to my potbelly.

      Oooh, velvet trousers! Nice.

  2. The tweed dress is lovely, but at that price it better be a perfect fit. Modern dresses don't have much of a seam allowance to work with either, so they're hard to alter.

I've started thinking about autumn as well. Just got a lovely log lady brooch from Luxulite for my early winter/late autumn coat, and I've decided to break out my lovely burgundy wool suiting and turn it into a pair of trousers. I had my sewing machine services this summer, and it's just stitch and tension-perfection at the moment :) Lovely days!

    1. Those log lady brooches are excellent. I keep eyeing up Luxulite too.

  3. HOF have beautiful clothes (I'm still tormented over that swing dress in mustard yellow) but as you said, they're not cheap. I have a suit in a similar fabric/colour and honestly, I never wear it. Yes, it is beautiful but nothing goes with it. Brown, red, cream? Nope. Anyway, that's just me and the suit I have isn't as versatile as a dress and jacket. The Seasalt dress is vibrant and fun and just the thing for a holiday.

I like your teacup and saucer.

    1. The teacup and saucer are part of my art deco teaset - I got it for £15 in a house clearance place, but it only has two cups. I do love it, though. (Ironically, after accepting I'll never have an art deco house, I seem to have accumulated more art deco homewares as time has gone on.)

I love the print on the Seasalt dress. The shape doesn't excite me, but I know it's something I'll get so much wear out of I'll end up wearing it out in about four years.

  4. Lovely as it is, £ 165 really is exorbitant. For that price, it needs to be perfect in every way, I think. I'm sure it would look lovely on you in blue or green, though. I love the print of the Seasalt dress, so I'd go for it, as it will be great for your holiday. I do not have any specific wants at the moment, at least not in the clothing department, but that can change at a moment's notice when I walk into my favourite vintage shop ... xxx

    1. I went and tried on the Seasalt dress and it did not look good. It suffered from the old problem of oversized armholes, showing off a massive chunk of my bra. So it can stay in the shop.

  5. You'll get loads of wear out of that Seasalt dress, perfect for a day sightseeing in the baking hot sun.
That suit is lovely and I can totally see you in it but I went a bit grandma-like when I read the description, mixed fibres and polyester lining for how much? Is it a matter of style over quality?
I think my wardrobe is complete after I snaffled a pair of brand new American made Frye Campus boots still in the box from eBay this week for a Buy-it-Now of £35. They retail for £££s. I've been hunting for some for years! xxx

    1. I don't mind spending on HOF stuff because it's well-cut and made in the UK - I don't mind knowing I'm paying decent UK wages, not for some poor sod to be exploited in a sweatshop. I've got a couple of dresses from them and they look as good now as they did when I got them, despite repeated washings.

The Seasalt dress looked awful on - the waistband was too high (halfway up my ribs), which made my boobs look low, and the armholes were too large, which showed off half my bra. Those are gripes I have with a lot of modern clothes, mind you. I'm average height, so the waist issue must be even worse for tall ladies. And I honestly don't know why manufacturers make armholes so proportionally large.

Still, the green loafers I wanted popped up in the Van-Dal sale, so I might have something new yet... I just hope they fit.

  6. Oh gosh, that pink suit is stunning! I hadn't spotted that on their website but the fabric and the styling is beautiful. You so need it, it would fab on you! xx

    1. The waist is the issue. Because I'm thick waist/narrow hips, the 18 is too big in the butt and too small in the waist, and I don't want to make an expensive mistake.

I'll keep hitting the gym - I'm hoping that if I can lose some weight, my proportions will change. And who knows, maybe they'll have a green or blue version by then!

  7. I don't like the suit colur (but then I wouldn't would I!) and I think for that price it has to be a perfect investment piece that will be worn and worn and make you feel bloody fabulous every time. Save your pennies until the right thing comes along , you know it makes sense.....

Also keep an eye on Tiger Milly (if you don't already) their marketplace had a load of HOF in the summer sale at pretty good reductions.

    1. Oooh, ta for the tipoff. I've never ordered from Tiger Milly, but they seem to have a decent stock of Dancing Days stuff, which I like the look of.

  8. Oh, Mim!
The 1960s Coco Sheath Dress Suit looks fabulous, but you're right to be a bit worried and hesitate - it's PRICEY! (then again, I'm not the one to address that issue, since those £165.00 are almost 2/3 of what I make in a month - so, to me that is an impossible price!). But, it is gorgeous!
Seamstress Dress is adorable! I'm not much of a blue-person, but this pattern is so lovely - go for it!
    ..
And, one more thing: I just can not figure out WHY do people think that skinny = happy. I've been there, and I can tell you: NOPE, it's not true.
Now, about that shape-wear.. that a whole subject to talk about! (I need to get me some, too - but, right now all I can wear is my underwear - good thing I live alone) :)

    1. Oh, I've been skinny. I don't want to be that size again, I just want to get into my clothes. I didn't think the gym was doing much, but photos last weekend showed me it had had an effect.

I got shoes in the end :-) And a secondhand dress from a charity shop.
