Not shopping in the sales

Damn you, High Street. I'd been umming and ah-ing over whether to buy the 60s-feeling Seurat top from Fever, and then I missed the fact that their sale had started and now it's sold out. Gah. It would have been perfect with my navy trousers.

On the other hand, a number of other brands have sales on and I'm refusing to buy anything at all as now I'm going to the gym regularly, I'm really hoping I'll be able to wear some more of my genuine vintage soon. If I can't wear the summer dresses before summer's gone, I've got at least two suits that will be perfect for autumn and winter. I've never worn one, a beautiful late 40s/early 50s 'Cooltimer' by Printzess. It's the one on the left. Look at those curved pockets! That's the seller's original photo (I bought it from the excellent Soulrust on Etsy); needless to say I'll fill it out more than the mannequin does. And let's not talk about beige not being my colour. I've waited so long to wear that suit, I'm going to wear it even if I do look blah. A colourful blouse and jewellery will do the trick, I'm sure.

In case you're wondering, after about a month I'm seeing NO RESULTS AT ALL from going to the gym. I realise that it's harder for people in their 40s to get back into shape than people in their 20s, but I thought I'd see something after a month. We paid for a year's membership up front, so I'll keep going no matter what. It's not just about my figure, anyhow, the important thing is to lower Mr Robot's blood pressure, because he's got a strong family history of heart disease.

A pair of trainers on a wooden floorAnd while I'm not seeing changes on the outside, this week I ran for the first time in 27 years. I'm a slow runner, and was always made to feel bad about it at school, so when I left High School I vowed I'd never run again. But sometimes I dream that I'm running, and it feels so free. And I thought, 'You know what? My gym teachers can't make me run now, and I'm not going to let them make me not run now either.' So I ran. Only on the treadmill, and only for one minute out of every five, but I did it. Maybe if I stick to it, I'll be in the Cooltimer before the end of the year.

I don't have any plans for the weekend; perhaps I'll go for a whirl round the chazzas to see if they have any treasures for me. Charity shopping isn't real shopping, and if I end up shrinking out of stuff, it won't be a hardship to redonate it. Aside from that, I'm planning a weekend of gardening and cooking, and another session in the gym. MOAR RUNNING. I hope your weekend is as pleasurable!

  1. I enjoy distance running. It hasn't done much for my figure save for pretty solid leg muscles, but I'm in it for the cardio, not weight loss.

That suit is beautiful, and I know you'll find the perfect way to wear it.

    1. Yeah, lowering the Mr's blood pressure so he doesn't have the family heart attack is the important thing. I'd quite like him to stay alive and healthy!

  2. What a shame about the Seurat top being sold out. It is fabulous and so is that suit, which I wouldn't mind having in my wardrobe. You won't look "blah" at all, especially with some colourful accessories. I admire your willpower to keep going at the gym. As for running: I must be the world's worst runner and always have been. Always lagging several laps behind in my schooldays. So far, I haven't had the urge to try it again. Have a great weekend, and may the chazza gods be with you! xxx

    1. I was a dreadfully slow runner too. School really bludgeoned any pleasure in physical activity out of me.

Beige is not my colour, but I am determined to wear that suit.

  3. Go you! I can't run and I'm forever grateful that I have bad knees and the doctor advised me never to run because of them. I have seen no results either from exercising either size wise, but I think I'm still eating and certainly drinking too much. I feel better in myself so that's the main thing.

    1. I probably eat and drink too much too. Though I don't like to drink the night before a gym night, so we're going to the pub far less, and that's meant less junk food too. We're both able to do more, physically, which is the good thing.

  4. I don't think that suit looks blah at all, I think it's GORGEOUS! You don't see such beautiful tailoring nowadays. It will look fab on you & you can accessorize it with nearly any color you please.
If you aren't losing weight after exercising for a month try cutting out the carbs. That's the only thing that works for me & it's an easy diet to stick to.

    1. I probably need to cut out the beer and junk food... though we are consuming rather less of that now.

It's a gorgeous suit, but beige is not my colour. Don't care, going to wear the suit anyhow. One day.

  5. It's so hard not shopping!! I've had my eye on quite a few things that sold out. I guess they weren't meant to be! Well done for sticking with the gym, it's so hard to establish new habits. Keep going!! X

    1. We paid for a year up front, so that's giving us an incentive to keep going. (£350 is a lot of incentive...) And, of course, I want Pete to be healthy and not have the family heart attack.

I reckon I will start seeing changes within a month; I can feel different bits aching after each session so there's got to be some muscle toning going on.

  6. That suit is an absolute stunner! Beige does wash out us redheads a bit but I am sure that one of your beautiful scarves at you face would lift it tremendously. It is gorgeous, the pockets are fab. You definitely don't get them like that these days. I admire you going to the gym. I badly need to but have no motivation at all. I don't even go out walking any more although the weather is far too hot at the moment. Good thing for Mr Robot. Getting older brings so many health things to worry about that don't bother us when we were younger. I laughed a Billy Connelly when he mentioned going "ooft" when getting up but I do it too now. :) Xx

    1. I've got too much travelling to do to get creaky, so they gym will have to do. It's really helping with my anxiety too - the doctor did say more exercise might help reduce my stress levels a little.

  7. That suit is stunning! A brilliantly coloured scarf tied around your neck vintage airline stewardess style or a cheeky peep of emerald green, dragonfly blue or orange camisole top would lift the colour a treat!
I'm glad you've found an exercise you enjoy. Sometimes it's not so much the weight loss but the confidence that comes with working out regularly that makes you feel better about yourself. xxx

    1. The endorphins are definitely helping with my stress levels - I've needed my beta-blockers a lot less since starting.

We booked our first two hotels in India this week - one in Kolkata and one in Mumbai. We're hoping to spend the middle of the trip in Aurangabad so we can visit the Ellora caves.

  8. What a lovely suit! It'll look even more fabulous brightened up with tops and accessories.

Well done you on the gym! I hate exercise but never had a problem with weights at the gym, it was all the running type things I had a problem with. I'll never understand why people love exercise, particularly running; Andy loves it.
