Outfit post: I'm with the (hair)band

Wide hairbands are definitely my thing right now. Mr Robot reckons they make me look like Axl Rose but I don't care. (I hope he means the 1990s version, when Axl was quite pretty, and not the way he looks at present.) Today I decided to fold up a lovely 1960s scarf Curtise sent me and use that. It's satin, so was a bit slippery in my hair, but it's in place now. Most of my hairbands are stretchy fabric ones from Claire's Accessories; I check back every so often to see if they've made them in any new colours and buy any that I'm missing.

This whole outfit is secondhand. Our butcher has closed so we're having to drive to Devizes to the other branch; the lemonade I'm making from this is using it as a chance to explore a completely different set of charity shops, and this orange T-shirt was one of two I picked up there last weekend. The other one is lime green. Pretty colourful for a former goth. I got rid of my tatty old longsleeved jersey tops a month or two ago; they'd hit the point of being all shapeless and never quite coming clean in the wash, and I had planned to replace them with proper blouses, but I haven't really got the funds to buy several new blouses, and I just wanted something that was easy to clean and didn't need ironing. T-shirts it is, then. Yes, I am a slob.

The skirt is 1990s M&S. 1997, to be precise - there's a copyright on the label. It's houndstooth, and a slightly odd mix of colours, with black and olive plus thin stripes of rusty brown and cobalt blue. It's knee-length, and I really like it. That cost me £8, which is more than I'd usually pay for something in a chazza, but it's pure wool and in perfect condition, and will get loads of wear. I topped the whole lot off with my brown Dents bag and brown velvet jacket (NOT chazza, but still secondhand - it's a 70s one I bought from Kinky Melon).

Right, let's Tuesday!

  1. Well done on your 100% second hand outfit! The hair scarf really suits you, especially this one, which offsets the colour of your hair. Love the orange T-shirt, which is a very nice colour. Glad you are able to make lemonade from your butcher closing down by getting to visit different chazzas. Ours haven't been very exciting lately ... xxx

    1. Orange is a fab colour. I don't know why I don't wear it more often.

The other branch of the butcher does have its advantages - the Devizes shop also has a fish counter.

  2. I like you in a headband.
How lucky to find tee shirts in wearable lengths with sleeves that don't fall at the elbow. If I could find ones in proportions like yours, I'd snap them up too. Orange is a great colour on you.

In the absence of a headband in the right colour I've resorted to using a knee-sock tied at the ends. If you have any odd ones about, it might keep you in stretchy headbands.

Ugh, our Tuesday is pouring rain. Hope yours is better.

    1. This was actually a supermarket T-shirt. Sainsbury's seems to turn out surprisingly good stuff every so often. (Tesco, however, always disappoints.)

  3. You've struck chazza gold there, Mim. A decent tee shirt is nigh-on impossible to find and you've scored two! I love the colour of that orange one and the shape and neckline are superb on you.
The scarf looks ace, proper Swinging Sixties. Do you use Batiste? (Other dry shampoos are available). Giving clean hair a quick blast with it should stop that annoying slipperiness. I have a loyal gang of women who visit our stall and I tie their scarves for at a certain festival every year. xxx

    1. I know! Especially in plus sizes, where manufacturers normally feel the need to plaster everything in ruffles, slogans and glitter, as though that will somehow distract from the fatness. (It doesn't, and I resent being made to look like a glitter ball.)

I haven't used batiste, though I have been looking into it for backcombing. I've had a couple of goes with a regular brush and was amazed at how well it worked - for about 30 minutes. So I'm planning on getting another backcombing brush, to replace the one the Urchins must have nicked, and some dry shampoo.

  4. You pick such nice colour combos - the green scarf sets off your hair a treat. What a cheeky comment about Axl your husband made!!

    1. I love bright green and blue with my hair. (Also they make my over-rosy face look less scarlet!)

  5. Those are very autumnal colours and they suit you! T shirts are fab and such easy items. I love your hairband. If it's made from a scarf (a headscarf, I assume) then the possibilities for future head bands are almost endless. Since I started wearing headscarves tied round my short barnet; I've picked up about dozen in a range of colours from the chazzas usually around the £1.00 mark.

    Happy Tuesday!

    1. Yeah, it's just a plain old headscarf. I've got a lovely, but knackered, silk one, that I might cut up and add some elastic to the back of to make a proper headband.

  6. Pffft!
    Axl never looked that gorgeous!
    Love that color combo.
That tee looks fab and far more comfortable than any predictable blouse.

    1. I tend not to wear T-shirts because they feel so easy it's kind of lazy. Like living in jeans. But my working life has been so stressful this year, I'm actually giving in and accepting that it's okay to take some things easy!

  7. Love that shade of green, it really suits you! Axl Rose indeed! Cheeky!

  8. Mim, you look fabulous in that colour and it really sets off the colours in your skirt. !00% chazza is pretty good going. I think that your outfit would look fabulous with brown. Your hairband is lovely. It looks really 60's and not very Axl, although G'n'R were pretty cool back in the day. You really suit your hair like that. Xx

    1. My husband was/is a massive G'n'R fan, so at least there's that. And Axl had great hair, even if he was/is a bellend.
