Crinoline Robot's Vintage Week

While I wouldn't say I've had a particularly vintage-stuffed week over the past seven days, I do feel as though my love of vintage, which I'd felt was waning, is slowly trickling back. My enthusiasm for many things is trickling back; I'm knitting more and cooking more and so on. It's not just the weather. Since New Year there's been a restructuring at work and I wasn't sure if I'd be keeping my job, but this week I heard I was being kept on, which makes me feel so relieved. I am being given an extra magazine to do. My current one, Official PlayStation Magazine, is the bestselling games mag in the UK, and the one I'm getting in addition, Edge, is probably the country's most prestigious, so it's a big compliment from my bosses. (A big, terrifying compliment.)

I feel like rewarding myself with a treat, and popped a couple of things into my Etsy basket, but the prices really made me wince. The items weren't that expensive, but shipping doubled the cost. I emptied my basket again and checked when Judy's Affordable Vintage Fair would be in Bath next. The fourth of February, it turns out. Looks like I'll be treating myself then instead.

I have been putting more effort in with my clothes for the past couple of weeks. Probably I was distracting myself from a stressful situation, but I've worn a wider selection of my jewellery than I did late last year, including my Coro diamante earrings and brooch set. The fake brooch got an outing too; the earrings are clumsy but the brooch is okay, and it looks really good with my navy cardigan and navy/brown pleated tartan skirt.

We finally got rid of our original 1950s fridge - in the end, we had to pay the council to collect it and junk it. I'm a little sad about that because I'm sure in a year I'll meet someone who would have wanted it and loved it, but we really do need the space for a cabinet to hold our plates and pottery. Mr Robot has been watching Antiques Hunt on telly and is keen to see what bargains we can find at auction, so I'm hoping we can get a nice cabinet for not too much money.

And Further Back In Time For Dinner was ace. I'll probably write up the first two episodes as one post. If the second one is as good as the first, it's something to look forward to. Did you watch it?

  1. I am SO HAPPY for you!

Shipping from the States to anywhere these days is murder-it is getting absurd even within the country.

    1. I'm also fed up of things getting broken in the post nowadays - it seems like every postal option is equally awful.

  2. After those stressful couple of weeks, you certainly deserve to treat yourself, Mim, and I'm hoping you'll find some lovely things at Judy's next week! We've recorded Further Back in Time for Dinner on our digital tv thingy, and we'll be watching it this weekend. xxx

Why is it so hard to ship from the US to the UK? Where's all this globalization hen you need it?

    1. And that's before we get into the dreaded customs charges - if UK customs decide it's a commercial package, they slap a customs fee on top, and then the Post Office adds an extra handling charge. Usually it adds up to around £20 extra.

  6. Congratulations, Mim. What a wonderful tribute to your expertise. I'm so glad you weren't restructured out. Having been through the same thing on two occasions when teaching, I know how stressful it is.

I loved the programme but I felt that the maid of all work wouldn't have had to do the cooking as well. Didn't she do well though - only 19 years old and just finished college.

    Have a great week.

    1. She did brilliantly! She did say how hard it was. This week I found it interesting how after just a couple of 'decades', while the family felt bad about all the work she was doing, they didn't really want to do without her. Puts how the real Edwardian middle-classes felt about losing staff after years of having them.

  7. Hurrah on surviving a restructure! Always the worst of things to go through at work :( Completely hear you about the ridiculous shipping on Etsy. I've been trying to buy a vintage suitcase for the wedding and found the perfect one - to ship from America was going to cost x3 as much as they were selling it for!! When you ask the sellers, they always say it's the best they can do... It does make me wonder if they're going to be wrapping the products in gold-plated paper or something!

    1. Have you checked local auctions for suitcases? This should have details of what's available at your local ones: https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb I only thought of it as I spotted some vintage suitcases at my local auction house the other day and was surprised that they seemed relatively cheap.

  8. Congratulations on getting the extra magazine. I'm glad the restructuring is over, it must have been very stressful.
