Outfit post: summer tones for a sunny evening

Look, I have feet in one of my outfit post photos! Mr Robot made sure to fit them in as I'd gone to all the effort of painting my toenails blue so they'd go with the dress and contrast with the coral peeptoe shoes.

The blue nail varnish, which you can't really make out, is a Rimmel 'Gel' one. You put on two coats of colour, then the super-shiny top coat. The bottles claim it will last up to 14 days, and while I doubt it would do that, it certainly coped with a week of my holiday. I don't often wear nail varnish as I'm really hard on my nails, so I plan to buy some of the other colours in the range as it's so durable.

The dress is the Seasalt 'Talskiddy' dress I bought to take on holiday. (And it's currently in the sale.) Coral and turquoise seem to me to be perfect summer colours, and I felt fab every time I wore this outfit.

I tried to get some decent-quality sandals I liked before going away, but the blue Clarks ones I found wouldn't go over the widest part of my foot, so I didn't buy them. The fabric flats are flimsy and won't last the summer, but they were only £6 in a cheapie shop and are very light in weight so wouldn't tip my baggage over its weight allowance. If I had gone crazy buying souvenirs, I could have ditched them. And hey, they match the dress.

I'm also wearing earrings from Accessorize. You can't really see them in this photo; they're these ones. Having lost a treasured pendant on holiday in the past, I only take one or two bits of good jewellery away with me (which I always wear for travelling, so it can't be forgotten), and the rest is easily-replaced costume stuff.
Do you mind seeing brand-new stuff on this blog occasionally? As in, non-repro, actual high street stuff? My dress isn't vintage, but it does have the graphic print and simple lines in common with the vintage clothes I go for, and some of the 'repro' ranges don't come close to what people actually wore in the past. Now I'm back in the UK, I'll pair the dress with actual vintage accessories, a blue boxy bag and my midcentury coral jewellery set, which I think will make it look more retro.

  1. Yay, shoes!
I'm wowed by the fact that your hair looks so great on holiday (mine always ends up in a bun after a day). You look happy, and beautiful and the dress is just divine.

Gosh, I don't mind seeing modern clothing on a vintage blog. That dress is so timeless it could fit in anywhere from the early 60's onward. Sometimes, you just want clothes that don't smell of mildew and cat pee, and there's no shame in shopping the high street for those items.

    1. Weirdly, Spanish water seems really good for my hair. That and my skin felt better than they had done in ages!

I've realised that the 60s silhouette was so simple and had such a massive impact on clothing for the decades afterwards that if I stick to plain colours, I don't need to shop for authentic vintage or even repro - often, modern basics are fine and the accessories can do hte 'heavy lifting'.

  2. Well you should feel fab in that outfit because you look absolutely fab in it! Love those coral peep toe flats too. I don't mind seeing new high street stuff on anyone's blog. Those of us who wear uncommon sizes are often forced to buy thing "high street." I'm more interested in your ensemble & styling, which is absolutely brilliant!

    1. Yeah, I sometimes think the vintage purists don't realise that people who are larger, or have unconventional bodies in some other way (eg a disability) don't have the same options.

  3. Hey Mim!
I love that you have had such a great time in Spain (tacky? never!) Spain has some of the most amazing architectural wonders, and it's packed with history. It's such an eclectic place, there's room there for everyone's taste: from fun and funky beaches up to great museums...
I would LOVE to see more fashion.
    Vintage outfits are not everything.
    You look positively amazing!

Has my letter found the way to you????

  4. How fabulous you look! Love this outfit on you, the colours are gorgeous.

I don't mind seeing modern clothes at all, especially if they're vintage appropriate xxx

ps - I listed a few Elvis film ideas on my blog for you in the comments section x

    1. Yes, thank you for those - I shall look out for them. TCM has to show a few Elvis films at some point...

  5. Great photos and you look fab in your outfit. No, seeing brand new stuff doesn't bother me either. I prefer to see high street clothes in blogs rather than those bloggers who drone on and on about designer gear in the hope that they get some freebies! You carry on! xx P.S. Rimmel Gel is really good, but check out Superdrug's Mua range - only £1 for a small bottle - I find that it wears well too.

    1. I unfollow people who are all about the freebies - it just gets annoying. I remember seeing someone griping about being offered a camera to test and having to give it back. That's what tech magazines have to do, we don't get to keep stuff, why should bloggers think they're any different?!

  6. I loved this dress when you showed it to us before, but I love it even more when you're wearing it. You are looking fabulous and those shoes match it very well indeed. Of course I don't mind seeing modern clothes, especially if they're as nice as this dress. I'm not very good with nail polish, as I'm far too clumsy to get it right. xxx

  7. What a beautiful outfit. I love those colours together and you have the perfect colouring for them. The backdrop is stunning. I don't mind reading about High Street RTW either. You have great taste and I like to see how you style them. Xx

I love the Plaza de Espana - hard not to look nice with that as a backdrop.

  8. Wow! I bet Seasalt has sold out of those dresses now, you look amazing! Well done to Mr Robot for a cracking set of photos. The shoes are perfect and you know how I love blue toenails - I haven't tried Rimmel, I might give it a whirl next time I can't find my favourite Barry M.
I follow blogs because I like the people who write them. Some of my best mates sometimes buy clothes from the high street and look as good as you do in them. It ain't what you wear but the way that you wear it. xxx

    1. I tried this nail varnish because it was supposed to be long-wearing, and I was very impressed with it. Now I'm back home and doing housework and gardening again, I've chopped my nails off. I can't keep them nice when they're long if I'm also doing stuff.

  9. I don't mind what anyone wears. In fact I love seeing people experiment as they work out what's best for them. I think you've found it. This dress suits you to perfection. You look stunning in it Mim, and it's actually a classic shape. Love your hair too. Xx

    1. Yeah, it's a very classic shape, isn't it? I can't be doing with fussy clothes. Anything that restricts my movement too much or interferes with things I'm doing with my hands drives me nutty. (I love the look of bracelets, but they wind me up no end when I try to wear them.)

  10. This dress looks so good on you, in fact better than it does on the model on the Seasalt website. The colour is perfect for you and the shape really suits you. Thanks for the Rimmel Gel tip, I hadn't tried that one but will see if they do a red similar to my everyday one.
By the way, Wordpress seems to have set your blog posts as spam on my feed now too! I've missed loads the little gits!! Will follow you on Bloglovin instead. xx

    1. I did go down a size - looking at the dimensions and seeing how it hung on the model, I bought a 16 instead of an 18.

  12. Not in the slightest! Post away - it's always a pleasure to see any out that you want to share with us, dear Mim. This dress is really charming and certainly have a vintage-y vibe to it.

Big hugs & happy weekend wishes,

  13. Lovely outfit! Those colours are great on you and the nails are a nice touch. Doesn't worry me if you show modern outfits, I like seeing how you style things. I hope you had a really fabulous holiday. Looks like you went to some very interesting places.

  14. I have just been back and caught up with your Spanish adventures, what a beautiful country, you really fitted so much in in a short space of time, I have never been to Spain but now I am longing for a trip, especially for the tapas!

That really is a gorgeous dress and the colours work really well on you! I have no problem with modern high street fashions on blogs, especially if it has a vintage style, as it's nice every now and then, to think ooh I really like that I will get one for myself! xx

    1. Thank you!

The trick to tapas is not to go anywhere touristy - in Toledo, my favourite places are all round near the local government offices. They rely on repeat custom from locals, so the tapas has to be good.

I love Spain. There's so much more to it than the coast, which is all most people see, but it's dead easy to get around on public transport.

I'm a sucker for Seasalt right now. There's something about their unique prints that I really love.
