In which I apologise for being rubbish

I have not been eating cake. I spent seven days
living on soup, and can now manage mash.
I would like to claim to have been bimbling again, hence the lack of interesting activities on my part, but the truth is that with print deadline next week – my magazine recently went up in pagination, so there's loads more work and I went into the office yesterday (Saturday) – and my hideous dental infection sapping my will to do anything I've done very little of any interest. But here's what has gone on/ is coming up...

So far this year's giveaway Box of Robotness is only part-full, but there will definitely be one by the end of the month, and what I have assembled to put it in is rather nice. I need to find some more bits and bobs to go in, though. I only do one giveaway a year, so it needs to be a good one.

Rubbishness will continue early next week as I'll probably have to work into the evenings on Monday and Tuesday, but on Wednesday it's my friend Tim Weaver's book launch. I go to his launches every year, and Mr Robot takes the photos. We used to work on a games magazine together, but nowadays Tim writes crime novels and is doing rather well at it! In his early days he'd do a day at work, then go home and work on his books into the night – he's worked really hard for his success.

I got sent a lovely 1960s dress in the post this week. It's a bright pink cutwork lace shift dress. I swapped it for a silk TrashyDiva dress I'd never worn and had outgrown. I'd wear it to Tim's book launch, but it's probably a bit flamboyant for a day at work beforehand, especially with my red hair. (Emma Peel wore pink and she had red hair, therefore red and pink don't stink...) Do my workmates deserve that much Fabulous?

On which note, would any regular commentators like a size 16 Heyday! Mary dress? It's a stunning frock, in a 'deco green' satin but satin and my tummy aren't good pals, so again I've never worn it - I tried shapewear, but really I should just learn to avoid satin. Never been worn (in fact, it might still have the tags on). You can see it in other colours here. First regular commenter who wants it can have it for free. All I ask is if you decide you don't want to keep it, you spread the love and give it away, you don't sell it!

  1. I hope you feel better soon, dental work is a miserable business. I did myself a mischief after my biopsy at the end of last week. I could have smacked myself for being so silly as to overdo things.

Your pink dress sounds really lovely. I can't wait to see you in it xx

    1. Oh no, I hope you're recovering now.

The dental area still feels uncomfortable, but i'm not sure if it's bruising or the infection is still lingering, so I'm going to leave it, take lots of vitamins and get lots of sleep, and see if it goes.

  2. Dress sounds lovely and I would love to fit into a sz16 but am so far out the other side that it will never happen again in my lifetime. :) Sorry to hear about your dental infection. Those things can be bloody sore. Hope that is goes away soon. I wore pink to work with my red hair and got lots of compliments. Love it, I say go for it. Life is too short. Really sounds like a fabulous dress. Xx

    1. Indeed, some people seem to spend their whole lives waiting to do something and then never getting round to it. I'd rather go for things.

  3. You poor thing, it must be really, truly horrible, I hope it clears up soon.
Satin is NOT a forgiving fabric, it must be said! I have been humming and hahing for a while over those dresses, wondering if they would look ok on me...not the satin ; )...I'm quite taken with the Twizzle too. It's just that being short, v necks always seems to be far too low and I end up having to insert lace or something to hide the fall out, so to speak. The coat is beautiful, but I have a black brocade that is very similar, 2nd hand Dotty P of all places.

    1. They are really lovely dresses. I'm a big fan of Heyday - and I'm not affiliated with them in any way, they just seem to make clothes that last really well and I get loads of wear out of. The neck on the Mary is quite high, designed not to show cleavage, so it might be okay on a short lass. I'd recommend going to their stall if they're at an event you go to; I'd been thinking of getting some trousers from them but didn't know if a high waist would suit me, so waited till I could try them on at Vintage Nostalgia. Shona is really helpful.

  4. I can't wear satin either, but good luck finding your dress a new, loving home.

Sigh, teeth. Something so useful turning against us this way is so terribly wrong. I do hope you're well soon, and able to manage something sturdier than mash (not that there's anything wrong with potatoes when it is a choice).

I think your co-workers deserve your fabulousness, but you could always tease them a bit by hiding it beneath a blazer during work hours. When I coloured my hair red through most of the 80's I always wore pink, so of course you have my encouragement.

    1. I'm inflicting bumper diamante on my workmates today. Red hair, green dress, giant brooch. All the Fabulous they can handle.

I'm eating more regular things now, though I'm being careful until I've had the internal post and rebuild done. Lots of things like curries, no baguettes!

  5. I say wear the pink to work and knock 'em dead! Can't wait to see pics of you in it. Enjoy the book launch, and get well soon xx

    1. The book launch should be fun. It's very odd seeing one of your mates have real fans. Liz Hurley tweeted about reading one of his books, that was so surreal.

  6. I love pink clothing with red hair, go for it! How exciting to go to your friend's book launch, definitely wear the pink frock.
Sorry to hear about the gum/dental issues, hope that resolves soon. xxx

    1. Eeeh, dental problems have been in place for about 17 years. I'm really hoping this time it can be fixed.

I never wear pink, so the dress is a real departure. It feels fun to break out of a pattern.

  7. I would love the dress if it fits, as I never tried and heyday yet and know you like the quality if their clothes.

    1. Cool, you're the first person to want it, so I'll bring it to you.

I'm a massive fan of their cottons - I've got two cotton dresses and a blouse, and they get loads of wear.

    1. Ta! It's a double root canal to try to remove an infection - bit of a bugger. Hopefully this time it will be cleared, as I'm losing bone in my jaw from the infection.

  9. ..and here comes *ghasp*
Size 16 in UK is (according to my conversion chart) a size 46. As for me, I'm not suitable for that one; it would not fit me well and most certanly would not "hug" any curves... (that is all I'm sharing, knowing that in my case the word "curve" is more explinatory than existant) :)

    P.S.
I hope your jaw feels better, darling. I know of similar pains; I too have had some "work" done to my root earlier this year.

    1. Yes, this was a double root canal. Aren't they awful? But I keep telling myself that the dentist will put it right and then it will all be over, and I'll never have to worry about it again.

  10. Hair is a neutral - it goes with anything - do it and take photos. You''ll totally rock it.
Gah! As a teenager I had extensive and radical dentistry and still remember the misery. Get better soon. xxx

    1. I've had the infection for 17 years, but I'm losing bone in my jaw so decided to get things properly sorted. It's painful, but I'm sort of used to it (though last week was utterly wretched after the drilling). Still, it will all be fixed this time, I am sure.

  11. My best friend Jenny has red hair and wears pink often and looks fabulous in it so you must most definitely wear it and look fabulous too!

Well I fit a size 16 and green is a favourite colour...... but I'm such an odd shape I suspect it probably wouldn't fit me :(

    1. Well, if it doesn't work for lostgoth I'll post it to you so you can see. I've got a rounded tummy - proper apple - which is why it doesn't work for me, but someone with a flatter tummy or decent shapewear could probably rock it.
