Shorter hair!

A middle-aged woman with red hair
I've had a few inches whacked off my barnet. To be honest, this cut isn't as drastic as it could have been: I was weighing up a 'Dana Scully' cut but realised two things. One, that Gillian Anderson's hairdo changed a fair bit even over the 1990s series of The X-Files, so there was no one Scully cut, and two, that while they'd probably work on me, they probably wouldn't make me look like Gillian Anderson in any way. So I stuck with my 60s flip, and someone said the new 'do made me look like Emma Peel, so I'm happy. (I don't think I look like Emma Peel, but if I can evoke an aura of Peelishness I am a very happy Mim.)

My morning walks have resumed. I've never been angsty about my age before, but this year I'm really feeling it – the annoyance at those wrinkles that don't go even with a good night's sleep, worries about the bits that hurt for no apparent reason. I turn 45 tomorrow and am not happy about it. Perhaps it's because I work with a lot of people around 20 years younger than myself; I'm a bit of an outlier in games journalism. Anyway, I'm going to walk off those aches and pains, and hopefully a bit of my winter chub, and remind myself that the only alternative to ageing is death and that's definitely not on the cards. Got too many places to go and things I want to do.

The angst is making me appreciate all the brilliant 40-something and 50-something bloggers I follow all the more. Seeing all those ladies enjoying life, looking fabulous and giving 0 fucks really is uplifting. What I take away from all of them is that it's important to have fun. To be less serious about the little things. Live your best life.

So, what fun have I been having? Reading vintage crime novels, of course, and watching far too much telly. I'm on the fence about Traitors; it's an interesting story but the heroine is possibly the least interesting character, and she often looks more 1935 than 1945. I did wonder if that's because the hairstyles and shoulder pads of the 1940s would look a little odd to present-day audiences, but it would have been nice to see a stronger 40s look. I've finally signed up to Spotify and have had fun making a huge 1920s/1930s playlist to listen to at work. And yesterday I started work on the mosaic kit Mr Robot got me for Christmas. I thought it would be dead simple and take me a couple of hours at most to do. After about three hours all I'd managed was the outline of the horse! So this project will take me a little longer than anticipated.

What have you been up to? Living your best life, I hope!

  1. I love the hair, it's fabulous! Very sassy. Age is just a number but nonetheless ageing is a little tough sometimes. One word against wrinkles: retinol!

I did find the fashion in Traitors a little 'early' - that evening dress in particular was very '30s. I do hope the main character isn't just bring manipulated, and turns out to be working for the Russians themselves or something!

    1. I think we're thinking of the same dress - the silvery satin one?

Feef is so naive, she's got to be being manipulated in some way beside the obvious. And something's got to come to a head with Keeley Hawes' character; you don't put an actress as good as her in something and then not use her.

  2. Your hair looks so good! I love those flippy ends.
I'd love to have a go at mosaic - that kit looks like a fab present, Mr Robot buys the best gifts.
I haven't go round to watching Traitors yet, I'll have to do an epic catch-up at the end of the series, I think. I'm beyond excited about the return of Deutschland '83 in March - East German spy drama.
Have the most brilliant birthday. xxx

    1. I started watching the first series of Deutschland 83, waned and never went back to it. I really ought to pick it up again at some point.

I don't think I'll have flippy ends all the time; I'm not very good at blow-drying, or organised enough in the mornings to do it!

  3. Mim, your hair looks fabulous - and very 60s, I think. I like your outfit; especially the skirt. The mosaic looks like a wonderful present; I have seen the most gorgeous mosaics on Pinterest - I get a bit lost once I'm on there...

It's good you've recommenced your walks and I hope you feel the benefit of them soon. It is so important to look after your health as without it life is shit!

I haven't watched Traitors nor have I recorded it; I should have done just for the costumes even if they're not spot on. I love both 30s and 40s clothes.

    Have a lovely birthday, Mim!

    1. Thank you! The skirt is one of my favourites.

Yeah, my mother-in-law had a bad back and it's made me determined to try to stay as healthy as possible for as long as possible - especially as Pete and I are childfree so we need to be able to look after ourselves.

  4. Love the shorter hair with the flippy ends on you, Mim, and I agree it looks kind of "Peelish". You're very brave tackling that mosaic kit, which I think would drive me mad. But I'm sure it will look fab once finished! Oh, and a Happy Birthday to you, have a fabulous day tomorrow! xxx

    1. Thank you! The mosaic is harder than I thought it'd be, but that'll make it all the more rewarding when it's done.

  5. Happy Birthday! Your hair looks great-though it always does at any length. I don't know about living my best life, but my 50s have been great as I finally feel free of attempting to keep my youth.

    1. It's fantastic seeing so many brilliant bloggers enjoying their 50s (especially when I'm surrounded by people who see 30 as the end of the world). Those blogs are a breath of fresh air in a youth-obsessed world.

  6. Fab hair do. I'm watching Traitors too, on the fence about it at the mo.

  7. Hope you had a fabulous birthday! I'll be 45 this year too and am having a slight eek about it, but as you say better than the alternative. In the main the older I get the less f**ks I give, so here's to middle youth, bemused beffudlement and rocking out in a care home!

  8. I agree with all the hair love it's fab. The aches and pains are definitely the downside of getting older. I started pilates to try and keep myself a bit more mobile. As they say use it or lose it!

  9. Love the new 'do & you look fab!
    That mosiac looks fun.
My 50s are more fun than my 40s were!
