Happy Halloween!

Halloween cake
Halloween's my favourite holiday; I don't care if it's not something we've traditionally celebrated in Britain. I had planned to do a monster spread (literally) for work this year, but then I got ill last week. I soldiered on for three days, but on Thursday and Friday completely lost my voice and couldn't do anything.

I hate being ill. Hate it. It's so unproductive. I have no end of admiration for the bloggers I see who keep on going despite chronic illnesses. I just lay around on the sofa feeling sorry for myself. (On my sick days rewatched Partners In Crime; I'm more annoyed than ever that both that and Jekyll and Hyde got cancelled. There's very little in the way of decent deco-era programming on telly at the mo.)

Anyway, here's this year's Halloween cake, which draws on 2013's pumpkin patch and 2014's Martian - both those were pretty successful, so instead of being adventurous I went with what worked. I made a load of monster cupcakes too. I hope your celebrations, if you're celebrating, went more to plan than mine did. My piping skills (I piped the bones and tombstones from white/ coloured white chocolate) are improving to the point where I'm thinking of asking Santa to bring me some acetate and a chocolate thermometer so I can make patterned 'collars' for cakes. That's not at all a vintage technique, but I suppose I could turn some of my favourite vintage embroidery patterns into chocolate collars.

  1. Happy Halloween! Your cakes are wonderful, how fab are your monsters!

We're not doing anything but we have sweeties for trick or treaters just in case, though we have never had any since living here. We do have pumpkin pie though, I made it Saturday so it should be just right by now xxx

    1. The monsters were a last-minute switch from the cupcakes I'd planned as it turned out I didn't have enough of the right sugar. Everyone liked them though.

  2. Isn't it rotten? I hate being ill and useless. Hope you start to feel better soon.
We've pushed ourselves more than we should this weekend and are both coughing and spluttering again. This afternoon was spent watching part one of The Moonstone with posh stem ginger biscuits from the Co-op.
Your cake is a work of art as are the cupcakes. Great idea with the chocolate collars. xxx

    1. Arse, is the Moonstone on already? I missed that! (This is why I do my telly updates on the blog. It's easy to miss things, even when paying attention to the schedule.)

Lurgy is going, though the air con at work isn't helping my cough any. We're in a building where the windows don't open and the temperature is controlled via the air conditioning, so there's no way of turning it off.
Being over-ambitious, I'm already contemplating Escher collars...

  3. Sorry to hear you've been ill Mim, so have I! It's horrible. Today is the first day since last Wednesday I have begun to feel better.

    Those cakes are scrumptious!

    Happy Halloween!

    1. There is definitely something rotten going around. Loads of people have been poorly.

Everyone liked the cakes; I got to share them with loads of lovely people.

  4. Ekk! Those are some scary (in the best way) monsters.
I hope you're feeling better soon. The cake is a work of art. I'm still waiting for trick or treaters to show (I doubt we'll get many). I made a Barmbrack to serve tonight-did all the charms for fortune telling. S

Hope you had a fun night.

    1. I hope your fortune came out well for you.

I had wanted to do a body parts feast - brain cake, sausage 'fingers', mini-Babybel eyeballs etc - but was too ill, so graveyard cake had to do. Perhaps I'll do the body parts when the new Resident Evil game launches.

  6. Seems like a lot of folks all over Europe are feeling less than great lately. Over here, the ambulance is quite crowded and an alert is on for the "stomach flu" or something rather like it.
(when it comes to being sick, we seem to stand united, right?)
    Now, now..
These images look PERFECTLY lovely to me. I haven't had a scary-looking cake.. ever. Since, we don't celebrate Halloween; and all other holidays feature deserts that must look a lot less-- ghoulish. :)
    I hope you've had a lovely Halloween.

  7. What super looking cakes! You're quite the talented baker.

We just had a slap-up dinner for Halloween, it wasn't gruesome themed or anything, but I made a roast and set the table and lit all the candles. We also drank some nice wine, 'Apothic Red', that had quite a spooky looking label. We were going to watch Dracula but caught up on the last episode of Poldark instead!

  8. I too have relapsed, walking round London all day on Sunday didn't help it was so cold.

I don't understand why they are showing The Moonstone during the day!?!

  9. Hope you get better soon, Mim! I hate being ill as well, but luckily - touch wood - I'm hardly ever ill. That looks like a very decent Halloween cake to me, and those monster cupcakes are actually quite cute! xxx

  12. There's some evil bugs around these days. Last time I had one I was properly ill for three whole weeks. Crazy! But I do have a top tip for you. Q has had the lurgy and I felt on the brink, but I took this thing called First Defence from Boots. It really works! Anyway your baking looks flipping amazing. If you can do that when you're poorly you should be on that programme everyone goes mad for!

  13. Great cakes. I love the thought of turning vintage embroidery transfers into cake collars. Look forward to seeing them.
