Nothing to see here, move along

Mulled wine at my desk. Oh yes!
I'm sorry, I'm being very boring at the moment. I'd like to share lots of gorgeous vintage goings-on with you, but I've been up to my ears in work as we have a short deadline in December, plus people like to finish early if they can. Wearing clean clothes and not eating too much junk food counts as an achievement with me this week. To be fair to work, we did have a Christmas party at the Roman Baths early in December, and a free lunch of turkey ciabattas and mulled wine this week (we were asked to make donations to Bath Food Bank), and we got given goodie bags including a bottle of Prosecco, so a few late nights is hardly turning me into a hard-done-by modern Bob Cratchit.

The main problem with working late is that it makes me want to buy stuff. I've managed to break my knitting wool habit – I have more than enough stashed at home – but I think my desire to buy clothes, which I'm really feeling, stems from the same source: buying the wool to knit with, or clothes I could wear somewhere, feels like the first step towards making something or going somewhere. It's not things I want, it's time. Which I will get, in abundance, at Christmas. At least I've been able to put the train ride home to good use, as I've popped my knitting in my work bag to do on the journey.

On the subject of vintage goings-on, Mr Robot and I managed to miss our usual December trip to see It's A Wonderful Life at the cinema, which was pretty rubbish of us. We have it on DVD, but it's not the same. My local cinema was also showing Die Hard this week, which I couldn't go to. Bake me a woecake!

I sent off my parcel for Jessica's Vintage Secret Santa, and I know a few bloggers I chat to are also taking part in VSS this year. I made part of my gift; I really hope the recipient likes it. I tried to pick a colour and style I thought she'd like. So there's something handmade, something vintage, something creative and something cute in the package. All bases covered! I've received something from Vintage Secret Santa too, so if you're reading this, thank you, mystery Santa! It is waiting under my tree to be unwrapped on Christmas Day. I also got lucky and won the top prize in Kavey Eats' Hotel Chocolat giveaway, a whopping great wreath box containing 42 truffles (brandy butter? Christmas cake? Mulled wine? Excellent), a cookie wreath and two chocolate snowflakes. That lot should keep me going till January.

And because they're what you're really here for...

Kittens? Still obsessed with the Christmas tree. At first only Pippin climbed the tree and Ziggy stayed at the bottom, patting baubles. Now Ziggy has learned to climb too, which means they get halfway up and start one of their slap fights, and the scrap only ends when one of them is knocked out of the tree. I swear they're made of rubber; they're always falling off of or out of things, and it never seems to do them any harm.

  1. Aw Mim, I hear your pain, December has been chock full of deadlines for me too. Escaping home right now to get our tree up as we're hosting a party on the weekend and need to look like we've made some effort. Well done on the Hotel Chocolat prize!! I have slid into a bottomless pit of mince pies.. xx

    1. Hope the tree building went well, and the party plans are all in order.

I have yet to eat any mince pies, but I did make a stollen last weekend and cut into it today. It's a bit dry, so I might try toasting it and spreading it with butter.

  2. I hope the deadlines get met and that you'll soon be able to lie round in your PJs, watch rubbish on the telly, eat crisps for breakfast and play with kittens.
Well done on your winnings! Very excited to see what you get in the parcel swap and what you sent the lucky recipient, too.
I'm not missing the 2000 festive dinners I used to have to supervise one teeny bit. xxx

    1. I have all my slobbing clothes ready!

Pete's planning all sorts of cookery shenanigans, so I shall leave him to it. It started small with a ham for Christmas day, then this morning he was musing about what to cook on Boxing Day, so he's probably got all sorts of schemes in his head.

  3. I am just the hugest bit jealous of your Hotel Chocolate win, well done you!
Good luck with surviving your deadlines, I'm working until the 24th Bah.

I've sent out my secret santa too, I can't wait to see what you got. x

    1. Ooh, I received a parcel from you, thank you so much!

I haven't got my choccies yet, but there are three parcels waiting for me at the Post Office, so I'm guessing it will be one of those.

  4. The two best words in the English language: Free Chocolate. Congratulations.

Sorry work's being so busy, deadlines are that much worse around holidays.

    1. I might argue that 'free cheese' would trump it, and possibly 'free beer', but 'free chocolate' is deffo in the top 3.

Work's always like this in December; the office is closed between Christmas and New Year, which yanks the print deadlines forward. As my mum came up in November I had most of my presents sorted by then, and that's something I shall definitely try to do again next year, it makes December so much easier. We've nearly finished the issue now - one big push today should sort it.

  5. It's a busy time, but you'll soon be enjoying sofa time with all that chocolate, a glass or two of Prosecco, and watching the kittens play in the tree - hang in there! xxx

  6. Work is pretty full on here too. So much to do before the end of the year. I love the video of the kittens. Congratulations on winning all that great chocolate. Chocs, kitties and mulled wine. Sounds like a good week. Xx

  7. Aha!
Smart move: putting your knitting in your work bag to do on the journey. While I travel, I often think about doing something like that. Alas, I mostly travel with a driver (no, I'm not posh, it's the Protocol at work - so that we don't get lost, stray away and waste time, and chose a mall instead of our real destination) - things happen. :)
Other reason is: I get horrible car sickness, and I'm one of those "eyes front" and "eat your mints" kind of person. I'm no fun, sorry.

Your kittens are, in my honest opinion, adorable. I know they, for sure, bring a large chunk of fun in your life!

  8. Thank you very much for taking part in this year's delightful VSS, sweet Mim. I think it's beautiful - and really in the classic spirit of the holiday season - that you made part of your gift. That is such a thoughtful touch and something that I bet your match will sincerely appreciate.

Tons of hugs & joyful holiday season wishes!
    ♥ Jessica

  9. Kittens, mulled wine and free chocolate. Deadlines aside, you've got this Christmas thing cracked. Shame about missing James Stewart, still, there's always next year. Oh, free time, how wonderful xxx

    1. And my editor gave me a bottle of port today. World of win. We have James Stewart on DVD, we won't go without.

  10. How nice of you to make your VSS a gift! I didn't take part as I have had bad swap experiences in the past when I didn't receive anything back ... twice!

We watched It's A Wonderful Life on DVD, that and a few other Christmas favourites like National Lampoon, Bad Santa and the Jim Carey Christmas Carol xxx
