Judy in Paris

After all my agonising about what to wear in Paris, I ended up falling back on a few favourites. I haven't blogged about it yet, but I bought this 'Judy' dress in the 'wonky wedges' colourway from Heyday! at the Vintage Nostalgia Show, and it's already become a wardrobe staple. I hadn't planned to take it on holiday, but popped it in the case at the last minute and it was perfect.

I'm always really impressed by the quality of the cotton fabrics Heyday! use. Just before I went away, I caught my sage bow blouse on a door handle at work, and rrrrrrrip! Straight open from armpit to waist (I was pelting through that door!). However, the stitching gave way but the fabric remained intact, so all that was needed was to re-sew the seam. This dress is similarly sturdy, made from a good, thick cotton that definitely isn't see-through and doesn't crumple horribly as soon as you look at it. It irons up beautifully.

The dress pulls on over your head and then there's a simple cloth belt to pull it all into shape. I guess if you're one of those lucky people to have full hips and a tiny waist you might want to try one on before buying, to see if you're happy with the amount of fabric bunching at your waist, but it's fine on an apple type like me. Given how much I stuffed myself in Paris, that tie-as-you-like belt and loose main dress came in very handy! It also means you can wear the dress a bit looser in hot weather. I've been thinking of getting a buckle and turning the tie belt into a proper belt as I don't really need a bow emphasising my middle.

The Judy doesn't show much cleavage and goes down past the knees, so gives a good amount of coverage, but the fun prints it's available in stop it from looking frumpy. I really love this particular pattern. It's very strong and graphic, and the large number of colours in it means it pairs happily with all sorts of coats and cardigans that I already own. It's available in all sorts of colours, and I have been eyeing up the striped version, though the range includes solid prints, chickens (!) and a pretty, subtle floral.
As always, I paid for my dress myself, and am not affiliated with Heyday! in any way.

  2. I love this dress on you. The colours and the shape suit you so well and I can imagine it'll be great to mix and match with so much stuff.
Glad to hear your beloved bow blouse only ripped the stitching and not the actual fabric. Phew! I've never actually bought from HeyDay! but am always looking at their website. I really should order a Fleur dress as they're just so gorgeous, particularly the lemon sorbet one.

    1. I've got a Fleur, though I felt too fat for it to wear it this summer. For some reason I find the back-opening wrap dresses fly open on me more than front-opening ones, so it's deffo a style to wear a good slip under.

  3. I love that dress. I really like your photo where we can see more of it. You make it look totally fabulous. I went to their website and saw a very tempting stripy one. They really do have some great stuff. Xx

    1. Yeah, I like their stuff. It's not the cheapest around, but then it's not made in sweatshops (I believe a lot is made in the UK) and the fabrics are really nice.

  4. That is such a beautiful dress, and the details (sleeves, neckline, buttons) scream, "Quality" even over a computer screen. Of course your fab self does wonders for it (your hair is looking incredible, by the way).

I do like the clothes I've seen on the Heydey website, so it is good to hear they're well made.

Chicken, eh? I'd better go have a look.

    1. Thanks for the nice comments :-) The hair has faded a bit and is all rooty so really needs redoing - I gave it a good trim this morning. (IE stuffed it into a ponytail then cut the end off...)

    1. Thank you! It needs redoing, though I'm considering a change of job and am not sure whether blazing red is businesslike enough.

  6. That dress looks like it was made for you, they should use you as a model on their website.
Thank you for your kind and thoughtful comment. With minutes of reading it the chief registrar phoned me and explained about Tell It Once. Finally things are moving on. xxxx

I'm glad to know things are moving on. It's one of those things that affects a person deeply - even after the immediate awfulness, there continues to be this long, lingering sense of absence. And it's okay to be sad and feel that. I found myself wishing for the Victorian conventions of mourning; as a society we seem to be encouraged to get over stuff, to throw sadness off before we're ready. A year or two in Victorian black would almost be a flag that, "I can be sad now."

  7. I am simply in love with that dress and have to second Vic entirely - Heyday should use you as a model for that dress on their site. You are rocking it to no end, dear Mim!

Big hugs & happy wishes for this new mid-October week,

    1. Heh, it's more down to my husband's photography skills than anything. I'm so used to him, he gets great photos of me when even the pros I work with can't manage it.

It's such a simple dress - perhaps that's what I love about it. So simple, but very high quality.

  8. What a gorgeous photo of you that first one is, your titian hair looks glorious! The Judy is completely made for you by the sounds of it, I did look at it but wasn't sure how the waist would fit so your comments are helpful. Xx

    1. Thanks! I think because it ties at the waist it's quite forgiving on me; proportionally I've got a thick waist and narrow hips (vaguely cylindrical). A figure with a greater waist-to-hip ratio might make the dress look much more curvy than I do, or they might not like all the fabric at the waist. I'd deffo recommend trying stuff on if you come across a Heyday! stall at a vintage festival. I went to try on trousers as I wanted to try high-waisted ones but wasn't sure they'd work on me, especially as Heyday! do cut their trews for big-hips-small-waist. The trousers weren't my friend, but this dress was.

  9. Come to think of it.. I don't think any of us would mind being given some garments every now and then, right? :D
    You look magnificent.
Thevdress complinents you feminine figure (honestly, what you have is a FIGURE and a good one).

    ..
Oh, there's a long-overdue letter coming your way.

I'm not a massive fan of bloggers who take free stuff. If bloggers blog too often about free stuff they get, I stop reading them, because their blogs lose personality and turn into press releases. If someone's offered something they'd genuinely have bought themself, that's fine, but all too often I see people promoting clothes or things that's not their usual topic on their blog and it just screams of selling out. I like people whose blogging is genuine, and I want to keep mine genuine too.
