Go! Go! Go go!

Nancy Sinatra

Why no, I'm not settling on one decade. A lot of vintage lovers refuse to. I'm not seeking to recreate a time or place. And that's why a post about making 1930s beach-pyjama-alikes is being followed by one about go-go dancing.

Long-time visitors to the Robot will know I had burlesque lessons about six years ago. I'm not very well co-ordinated and I dislike most exercise, but I really enjoyed learning to dance. I do miss it. Well, among the people I follow on Instagram is The Meyer Dancers, a 60s and 70s go-go dance troupe. They've performed at Glastonbury and on telly, in Jimi Hendrix's flat... all over the place. And they always look absolutely superb, whether they're shimmying in mod fringed dresses or shaking in hotpants and crop tops.

I've seen the Meyers advertising their dance classes and wished London wasn't so far away. Now they're going to be running classes online, and I've signed up for the full ten weeks. Essentially the lessons are paired, so you learn one routine for a song over two classes.

As I said, I miss dance classes, so that was one incentive to sign up for these Zoom ones. I also need to find ways to start shedding the lockdown weight, so that was another incentive. And the other? One of the routines we'll be learning is to Nancy Sinatra's These Boots Are Made For Walking (a performance of which provided all the stills on this page). I love that song. Hopefully I'll wave my arms around enough to lose some wobble, as well as having a great time. And no, I won't be wearing hotpants or crop tops...

If you fancy shakin' your money maker, you can sign up for the classes on The Meyer Dancers' website.

    1. Me too! Anyone who doesn't enjoy at least a little bit of Nancy is just wrong.

  3. Like you, I am not very well co-ordinated and dislike exercise. I do like dancing as long as I can just do my own thing and nobody's watching. Those zoom classes you signed up for sound fun, though. And just mentioning the Nancy Sinatra song - one of my favourites too - has given me an earworm! xxx

    1. I'm hoping it will just be good-natured rehearsing. Burlesque class was always incredibly positive and supportive - while it was a performance art, without an audience it was more about encouraging each other to do our best.

  4. That sounds like so much fun, Mim! I have a couple of good friends who are into the burlesque scene here in Victoria (they know Jimbo, the drag queen from Canada's Drag Race!). I love watching burlesque - one of the best shows I ever went to was a horror-themed one for Hallowe'en - so fun!

I love that song - you will kick arse at it!
