Outfit post: secondhand special

Yeah, that's a scratching post
On my way into work this morning it hit me that I wasn't entirely convinced with this outfit. I had a yearning for something different, so got out a deadstock St Michael skirt I bought from a charity shop over the summer. I haven't worn it before as I really don't think it's me, but you know what it's like when you see 20th-century deadstock, you pick it up anyhow - or is that just me? It's got an elastic waist at the back, and I'm not a fan of those, but I decided the pale sage green top (BHS, also deadstock from a chazza but 21st century) would cover that. It would give me a reason to break open the khaki tights, till today still packaged in my drawer.

I did my best to glam things up, with a 1950s goldtone and brown diamante Lisner necklace, a 1970s brown velvet jacket from Kinky Melon, a 1960s chestnut mock-croc handbag, and brown shoes by Neosens that I thought looked a bit steampunky when I bought them.

I do like the shoes/tights/skirt together, and the jacket is gorgeous. I reckon the problem is the blouse. It's wrinkled here because I've just got in from work. This is how I looked in the office today. I do like this blouse; it's comfy, doesn't have too much button gape (a perennial problem for me), isn't tight round the tummy and is a nice length. Looking at the photo, though, I can't decide if it's too light in colour to go with everything else, or possibly being worn over my skirt, rather than tucked in, made it look sloppy. Perhaps a fine-gauge rust or deeper sage shorter top would look better.

What do you think?

And in other news...
I went with my team to see Rogue One, the new Star Wars film, yesterday. I wouldn't say it was a great film, but it pushed all my nostalgia buttons so I couldn't help enjoying it. Typical Star Wars really; the characterisation wasn't brilliant, but the scenery and action sequences did make me feel as though I'd been taken across the galaxy.

Ziggy has been exiled from the living room for unwrapping presents that aren't his; he's already had a go at a card/little package that Cate sent me. (Thank you very much, Cate - he only had time to savage the jiffy bag.) I'm now going to have to tape up a hole in Mr Robot's present as Ziggy has pulled a corner off it. Little toerag! As though Pippin trying to eat fairy lights weren't bad enough...

  1. You have some lovely elements in that outfit, the jacket in particular is gorgeous. I agree with you that maybe you could try a darker blouse next time, give it a go and show us the pic! It's sounding most festive with you.

    1. I love Christmas!

I think I'll knit something to go with it - though I've started a cardi for a friend, so the charity shops will probably have brought me something by the time I get round to knitting.

  2. I would wear that outfit-all my favourite hues and fabrics in one!
Blouses are tough, particularly with a traditional collar. I tend to go for bows as they hide any gaping, but they don't do much to hide my boobs. Since you asked, what I would do if wearing the blouse out is add a slim belt. It will let you adjust the length and add more fabric above the waist if needed. I couldn't wear half my blouses without belts. If all else fails, a scarf can distract from a less-than=perfect blouse.

That said, I do like the way you put the outfit together, but if you're not comfortable, that's all that matters.

    1. I don't tend to wear belts as I always feel they emphasise my lack of waist, but I shall give it a go. You are the Queen of Accessories.

  3. Let's take it one thing at a time:
    1. Your outfit is wonderful I personally, love breaking colors with something bright - and feel like something is "off" if there is no light to play as a contrast.
    2. I am yet to start planning my going to see the "Rouge one", since it's yet to come here.. but I have kept myself busy with crossing off some titles from my "to see" list - for instance, just started the last season of Musketeers.
and 3. Cats can play around a bit too much, and they honestly believe that every single thing does belong to them. Because, ultimately, they DO think the world revolves around them. :)

    Have a nice weekend.

    1. In our house, the world does revolve around the little monsters. They are so spoiled! We love them.

Rogue One is great, I really enjoyed it.

  4. Oh dear, your cats really are giving you the run around this year aren't they? Hehehe! Aw bless them! You're very welcome. It's only something little but I couldn't resist it. If I don't catch you before, have a truly wonderful Christmas and happy new year. xx

Ziggy is usually allowed to shred the junk mail as he loves tearing paper; he thinks the pile of presents is the most wonderful toy in the world.

  5. Hello velvet jacket, long time, no see!
The skirt, shoes and bag are fabulous. I love the tights, too. Yes, I agree, a darker green or a rust top would pull the outfit together and look a little sharper. Maybe you could consider dyeing the blouse if it's cotton or linen to a darker shade of green? It might not show the creases so much then.
Ziggy is a bad boy. Polly unwrapped her Xmas present one year and ate all her treats in one go. I've got a feeling Frank might be just as bad. Stephen's far better behaved. xxx

    1. It's a great jacket! It will get more outings in spring/summer.

I have bought the cats a jumping spider from Lakeland. It'll probably be destroyed in a day.

  6. We've just put up the tree, and Phoebe isn't the least bit interested. I'm sure she would savage any presents, though. I like the colours of your outfit and I can only second Goody's advice on trying to add a slim belt when wearing the blouse out, to add some length and definition. xxx

    1. Our two have taken to fighting under the tree. We'll be sitting watching telly and it will be rustling away, all sorts of thumps and yowls coming out from behind it.

  7. It's a lovely outfit, Mim. The colours are really autumnal. I love the colour of the tights and the shoes are fab.

I agree that the blouse is the weakest link; I have the gape problem too - bloody boobs! I was thinking about a polo neck maybe in a dark green to pick up the colours in the skirt and the tights? I don't know if you do polo necks? I don't. I have a short neck - and arms - and legs. I think a darker colour - burnt orange maybe, would give the contrast needed.

I think it's a case of curiosity killing the cat!

    1. I'm tempted to give a polo neck a go. I know people say they're a bad idea with a large bust, but it's not like I can do anything to hide the blighters, they're there no matter what I do! And orange does sound good.

  8. I like the colour of the blouse, but I'd tuck it in, even if the skirt has an elasticated back waistband. I might also have added a brown cravat :) Sound like the kittens are enjoying their first Christmas, wonderful :D

    1. It's their second Christmas - it's not quite as bad as their first. Last year they were small enough to climb the tree easily, and they spend SO MUCH TIME fighting in the tree. At least they're fighting underneath it this year.

  9. I agree with you I think the blouse is too pale, the rest of the outfit works great together.

I saw Rogue One on thursday I thought K-2SO stole every scene he was in.

    1. I thought he was a bit Marvin, but generally acceptable. I find it hard to see the Star Wars films objectively as they just hit my Nostalgia switch - I found the first part of the film quite 'meh', but as soon as there were AT-ATs and we got to see X-wing pilots talking to each other in the cockpits I loved every moment.

  10. Sometimes, outfits work in theory, in your head, but in reality, something doesn't feel quite right... Perhaps Goody's advice about a belt is the way to go. Are you ever a tucker-inner? Plenty of opportunities to play around with different elements anyway!
The kids are excited about Rogue One (me less so, but I'll go!) And the kitties are clearly VERY excited about Christmas, little monkeys! xx

    1. In general I try to avoid doing anything at waist level because I don't have much of a waist - it's why I often stick to dresses. I shall keep playing with the elements.

Hope you enjoyed Rogue One - I wasn't struck on the first half, but loved it by the end. Typical Star Wars; not great characterisation but magnificent spectacle.

  11. I clicked on your 'outfit post' label on your blog and saw loads of photos of you in gorgeous, really flattering outfits and I noticed a common theme; a fitted top half. That really suits you, so I reckon maybe that's worth a try to see if you feel better in that combo? xx

My husband loves seeing the cats play around the tree. We're having goose for Christmas dinner, and they will each have a little bit of goose too.

  13. I think a darker top would definitely be better with this look.

There's a new Star Wars film? If so, I did NOT know that!

Oh dear, naughty Ziggy. My mothers cat, unknown to anyone in the house, once found his Christmas stocking and got into the fancy cat food sachet, piercing it. The smell got increasingly worse, with no one having the foggiest idea where the terrible smell was coming from! xxx
