State of the vintage wardrobe / New Year's Resolution

I started this blog back in 2010, back when it struck me that I didn't have to be young and thin and pretty to enjoy vintage clothing, that I could have it every day if I wanted. Each January since, I've done a little post charting how my wardrobe has developed (2011, 2012, 2013), and last year I did note that it didn't seem to be developing in any particular direction. That's pretty much continued this year, I feel – though nowadays I do get people asking if what I'm wearing is vintage (usually when it's not!), so perhaps I can't see the wood for the trees.

This may be stating the obvious, but over the past few years I didn't actually turn into Colleen Moore, Lana Turner, or any of the other stars whose photos I admire. I turned into a nearly-40 chubby woman, just as anyone could have predicted, albeit one with an eccentric set of old-lady clothes and some cracking midcentury diamante and handbags. That's not such a bad thing. I don't know that my 'look', if I have one, is going to change much from here. I'm in a happy, comfy place as far as my clothes go right now.

So I have no fashion goals for 2014, no style aims beyond not looking inappropriate at events. I do plan to go to some great events, including the Vintage Nostalgia Show, so outfits will be required. I'm sure I can fling on some old thing that won't bring shame on my friends and relations!

However, having said I have no fashion goals, this year's New Year's Resolution is a knitting one, so it will have an impact on my wardrobe. I completed a pathetic number of items in 2013. Okay, there were two big items in the few I did finish knitting, significantly Sarah's wedding cardi and Mr Robot's Wartime Farm Sleeveless Pullover, but the number was pitiful. So,

IN 2014, I WILL COMPLETE 12 KNITTED ITEMS.

This is a bit cheaty as I have three things on the needles: a Fair Isle hat, the infernal, eternal navy cardi, and the second sock in a pair for my husband, but once they're done, everything else will have to be started and finished in 2014. I want to reduce my stash, too, so shall have to use wool from the boxes cluttering the bedroom where possible.

Have you got a style-related resolution for 2014?

  1. Like you, I didn't knit much last year, but Tasha's knitalong has kicked my knitting butt into action and I'm determined to keep it up. I don't really make resolutions ;cos I never keep to them, but I'd like to knit more from vintage patterns - particularly cardies.....but don't hold your breath

    1. I find it easier to keep positive resolutions - switch to Fair trade tea, support more Kickstarters, improve my choice of accessories by buying more brooches, that sort of thing. I never do ones that involve giving stuff up!

  2. Good luck with reducing the stash! I'd like to reduce my mending/alterations pile which has sat unmoving for most of 2013.
I don't think I've ever had a clothing resolution, I should really I have far too much and buy far too much.

    1. Gah, mending is the pits. Perhaps do one a week while watching telly?

  3. My style resolution is to increase my vintage wardrobe and one way in which I am going to do this is to knit more for myself. I did lots of knitting last year but nothing was for me and I plan to change that! Your description of yourself did make me laugh, think you are a bit hard on yourself!

    1. It is hard to be a selfish knitter, isn't it? I'm definitely going to do more for myself this year. It's such an easy way to increase the amount of wearable vintage you own (no need to worry about smells, stains, or accidentally damaging a valuable item!).

  4. It is a great realisation, that youth and beauty are transient, but that you can be fabulous at any age - glamour is within every woman's grasp, it's a state of mind!! I'm just going to have as much fun as possible with what I wear, I've decided that the worst thing would to be boring, and I'd rather people thought I was a bit odd and eccentric!

I think your wardrobe is wonderful, I'd love to have a rummage in it...
    Happy New Year lovely!

    1. My wardrobe is scary. I've got a frightening amount from the 90s in there that I've got too strong a sentimental attachment to get rid of...
