Repro 1930s fabric from Fabric Godmother

A sewing pattern lying on a pile of floral fabric. The sewing pattern is for trousers and a loose, unstructured jacket.

When times get tough, the tough go shopping, right?

I've just had an utter stinker of a work deadline – often we have to wait for news or access to stuff, and this one meant most of a magazine bunched into the last week, so we had a real fight on our hands to finish the issue. I worked Saturday, Sunday, till 10pm Monday and past midnight last night. So tired. Anyway, by Monday lunchtime I was in a pick-me-up shopping frame of mind, and finally ordered the fabric I'd decided on for my 20s-pyjama-inspired set.

This is Fabric Godmother's 'Hana' viscose twill. It's a reproduction of a 1930s print held at the Print Pattern Archive, and is absolutely perfect. It's not cheap, but dammit, I'd been hard at work and wanted something nice, and I've been spending far less since working from home. I was a little concerned it might be too loud, that the muted quality in the images was a colour cast, but no, there's a slight hint of sepia that mutes the colours slightly. And the weight is absolutely perfect for the project I have in mind; let's just hope my sewing skills are good enough to do it justice.

This makes me feel happy for all sorts of reasons. First, the garments are simpler than the top I'm working on, so should be easier to get to fit correctly. (The trousers have elastic at the waist; that's got to be easy to fit, right? And I wear all sorts of jackets that I can't do up, the shoulders are the only critical measurement there.) Second, it's a way of working some vintage style into my home-based modern lifestyle. I've been listening to 1920s/30s music since the parcel of cloth arrived. I love it.

So now I have lots of impetus to complete my top, so I can crack on with this lovely set. But first… sleep!

(Are you prone to pick-me-up shopping? I try not to do it too often, but sometimes you just have to!)

  2. You totally deserve a treat after that schedule.
The fabric is gorgeous and utterly perfect for the posh PJ lounging set.
I treated myself to a £4 bikini yesterday because of the miserable weather, it's got to be done! xxx

    1. I do look after my stuff, so hopefully this set will last me years. Cutting into it's going to be nerve-wracking though.

  3. Your deadline sounds truly horrific! No wonder you are tired and in need of some pick-me-up shopping. And yes, I am prone to that as well! That fabric you've chosen is gorgeous - not too loud at all! - and I can already envision that 20s-pyjama-inspired set in it! xxx

    1. They're not normally so bad - November and December are usually the worst, and I already know they're going to be stinkers this year.

  4. That's a beautiful print for PJ's.
Sorry your deadline was so awful, but there's nothing wrong with rewarding yourself with something pleasant.
I haven't shopped much at all, but I'm having expensive dentistry done. I did splurge $35.US to buy a Georgian mourning brooch yesterday. It is a beauty, but obviously I didn't really need to buy it.

    1. Dentists can cost an absolute fortune, even here. I hope yours goes well. Dental pain is honestly the worst; I burned my arm on an iron when my jawbone infection was flaring and didn't even notice.

  5. Oh yes, I'm definitely prone to pick-me-up shopping! Retail therapy, Mim! I ADORE your new fabric - wow, how amazing is that? I am sure elastic waist pants will be easy to sew, and I love the kimono-like styling of that pattern's jacket. Lovely!

  6. Who doesn't need a bit of shopping therapy now and then!? I just make sure there is a budget and try to keep to it. The fabric is lovely and should lend itself well to the kimono shape.

    1. Yes, it was right at the end of the month and as I hadn't had to buy a train ticket in August I had some spare cash. Can't wait to have a lovely set for loafing around in.

    1. This one was an utter stinker - like a pre-Christmas deadline, and those are the WORST. (This Nov/Dec it's going to be bloody awful because as well as the usual short deadlines, one of my publications is going to be a bumper issue.)
