Cast on: a 60s cardigan

1964 knitting pattern from Woman's Weekly.
Is is a cardigan or is it a jacket? To be honest it's halfway between the two. Over the long weekend I decided I was finally going to cast something on for myself, and began this woolly from a pattern that was given away free with Woman's Weekly in 1964. They may have called it 'Clever With Colour' but I'm knitting it in mid grey with silver flecks. I thought the bobbles round the edges would acquire a 'world of tomorrow' look knitting in the slightly metallic fabric.

The yarn is a long-discontinued one, Louisa Harding Jasmine, a blend of cotton, bamboo, silk (fancy!) and polyester (the sparkly bit). It's got a lovely soft handle, but holds its shape better than a yarn with a high silk content. Silk can sometimes be a little too drapy.

I haven't done a size adjustment from the largest 40in size as my back and shoulders are pretty narrow – I carry my weight on my front – and I'm not planning to wear it fastened, so the 40in version should be fine. Given how long it takes me to make anything, if I'm wrong about that you'll hear me wail about it some time next July.

I've had a bit of a 60s weekend, all told, watching old episodes of The Avengers and trying on my new jacket. (See the previous post.) I was just in the mood for a bit of optimistic escapism, and 60s spy-fi fitted the bill perfectly. I did watch some Other Avengers, the Marvel sort, in the shape of the 1940s-set Captain America film, which also features Agent Carter, one of my favourite Marvel characters. I'm still miffed her show got cancelled! Anyway, I hope you too had a good one, a weekend packed with all good things.

  1. I'm all for some optimistic escapism to lift one's mood! Well done on casting on the jacket which I'm sure will look lovely, and space age-y in grey with silver flecks. Looking forward to seeing you wearing it next summer ;-) xxx

    1. It's actually coming along pretty quickly, probably because it's in DK. I've spent so long knitting in 4ply I'd forgotten how quickly DK knits up.

    1. It's so lovely and soft! I'm not sure what I've got that it'll go with, but I'll cross that hurdle when it's finished...

I took my crochet along to Towersey - it stops me drinking too quickly! xxx
