Crinoline Robot's vintage week
Aha! The title is a con. I have not, in fact, been having a particularly vintage week. Like every month, I started August with all sorts of good intentions and everything fell by the wayside. Garden? A bit neglected. Home? Well, the effort that didn't go into the garden sure hasn't gone in there... I'm in one of those phases when getting up, washed, dressed in clean clothes and holding down a job is a success, and anything on top of that is jam.
So, what was the jam?
If we're counting baby steps, I have got round to unpicking the seams on my peg bag and cutting a replacement bottom part, then ironed the bits, ready to remake it with better proportions and no sagging. I have also carefully unpicked the facings from the armholes of my 60s top and ironed both those and the main part of the top, ready to trim back the armholes and remake it with less bold shoulders. Actual sewing has yet to happen, but I'm getting there.
We've been reliving the 80s at home as Mr Robot has discovered a digital radio channel that's all 80s, all the time. It's quite nice to sit on the patio, cats ponking around, with a bit of 80s pop blaring out. Don't think I'll be getting my hair permed any time soon though...
I've stuck to my healthier eating plan. I don't like to call it a diet because while it is lower in calories than what I was eating, I have no idea by how much, I've just ramped up the veggies and tried to reduce the booze and takeaways, and control portions better. If I really want cake or sweets, I have them, but they've become less of a habit. Last weekend Mr Robot presented me with a beautiful bento - Japanese lunchbox - that looks like Maneki Neko, the beckoning cat. The top is a soup bowl (I need to get some sachets of instant miso soup for that), and I fill his head with fruit or raw veg for snacks, and the bottom with rice, a protein (beef in the picture, but today it's vegan fried tofu as I try to stick to planty foods for lunch), and more veggies. And it's paying off! I was around 14 stone at the start of the year, and today I weighed in at 13.3.
I don't know if I look any thinner, and I don't feel confident to wear much of my vintage still – can get into it, but am not convinced by the way it hangs – but I'm going to keep making my own lunches, not overdoing it in the evenings, and going to the gym. I've been referred for physio on my shoulders but haven't had a date set for it yet, and the doctor said what I'm doing at the gym shouldn't make things worse. Well, it seems to be making things better. Hopefully my vintage will fit well soon. I've been having fun browsing Etsy again (no purchases) and should be off to the Classic Car Boot in London this weekend, though I'm not expecting most traders to have much in my size. I'm going to stick to buying accessories for a bit, so when I can wear my lovely things again I'll have outfits all ready to go!
See you at the Classic Car Boot if you're also going along...

I would have no patience for making lunches to fit in the Bento box. adorable as it is. If you're cutting up fruit-that's work!
ReplyDeleteGood luck at the car boot sale. Even if you don't find clothes you're bound to find accessories.
To be honest, I've been doing a lot of pre-prep - as long as rice goes in the fridge it'll keep for a couple of days, so I just stick rice in then fling on cherry tomatoes and whatever's left over.
DeleteI try to make my own fruit salads for breakfast to cut down on plastic waste (I feel guilty about buying preprepared stuff). Again, I make a big batch that'll keep for a couple of days and just get some out of the fridge most mornings.
I'm sure that lovely Bento box will be an incentive to keep taking healthy lunches to work. Me, I'm far too lazy! I do take my lunch to work, but they are just sandwiches, and even those are made for me by Jos! Yes, I know! Anyway, even if you're only taking baby steps, I'm sure you'll be getting there in the end. Hope you have a great day at the Classic Car Boot! xxx
ReplyDeleteI have a favourite sandwich bar in Bath, but haven't been there for weeks. The ones I make at home are rubbish (and I have no willpower, so if I take in my own ones I've usually eaten them by 10am!).
DeleteI love your Bento box, even the most mundane of lunches would taste better packed in that cutie. Good job on the healthier eating and the weight loss and I'm so glad it's making you feel better.
ReplyDeleteWasn't the 1980s great for music? I can't understand why people diss it so much. It really did have something for everyone.
See you at the weekend....eeeekkkk! xxx
I wasn't sure if it really showed - I'm still much heavier than I'd like to be - but looking at photos, my face is definitely looking slimmer. And my shoulders are getting even better!
DeleteI do love a bit of 80s music. Been revisiting a lot of 80s/90s goth stuff lately and very much enjoying it. As for the radio, I love Bananarama, and I'm not ashamed to say it! Also, every time the station plays Gold I think of you.
My friend Sam should be coming with me on Saturday, so if you have any darkly flamboyant menswear that will appeal to petite butch girlies, that's exactly her bag.
You sound as if you have schieved loads! Love the lunchbox and good luck with healthy eating plan. I have eaten very little meat since I came to Ireland, I don't eat that much at home but it's easier when you are just cooking for yourself..
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the car boot sale- you're bound to find some goodies!
I got some excellent things!
DeleteAnd I am sticking to my bento - it's forcing me to be more organised in the evenings and mornings.
Yay 80s! Definitely the best. Being a late early 70s baby (74!) I feel like I wasn't old enough to enjoy the best bits. That said I am beside myself with joy that Top of the Pops 86 is on BBC 4...that means the Bangles will be on soon! I too am not ashamed to say I like Bananarama, if my partner says an outfit is sub Bananarama - I think I've nailed it!! Not sure that's what he's getting at... Definitely better to adopt healthy eating rather than a full on diet - I on the otherhand rejoined Slimming World online and then promptly ate a burger and pizza this week... I haven't had any crisps though, so baby steps!
ReplyDeleteMy husband likes the Bangles - or at least Susanna Hoff - rather a lot. He goes all misty eyed every time he hears them!
DeleteBaby steps are good! It's all forwards.
I love you lunchbox too! I must admit have always made my own lunch but often it's just a cheese sandwich cos I can't be arsed! Can't wait to see your carboot goodies.
ReplyDeleteToday Bento Cat is full of leftovers, as I did chicken and veg in yellow bean sauce last night. It's surprisingly easy just to pile cold stuff into the box.
