Argh!/yay!

Sorry about the radio silence. If you've been reading this blog for any length of time you'll know I'm prone to the occasional bout of anxiety and I've just been through one of those. Argh. A friend was having a bit of a crisis and I was doing my best to support her, and worrying about her triggered my 'WORRY ABOUT EVERYTHING!' frame of mind. Luckily I had last week off and was able to potter round at home and decompress, but I stayed mainly off social media. (Ditched about a third of the Twitter accounts I was following; that was definitely the best move.)

Anyway, there were good things in the past week or so. For starters I was able to get into one of my vintage dresses. I bought this Global shirt dress from Kinky Melon ages ago; I don't usually go into the 1970s style-wise but this is clean enough in colour and pattern to appeal to me. It feels so good to be wearing some of my original vintage again! I haven't been dieting per se, but I have cut out all snacks, tried to stick to salads for lunch at work, and have switched to herb teas (no milk) in the office, and Mr Robot did say my tummy looks slightly smaller. When the person who sees you every day notices a difference, it's got to be significant. We renewed our gym membership and one of the best ways of dealing with my anxiety is to haul myself there and drown it in treadmill-generated endorphins, so I shall try to stick to going regularly from now on.

What will I be able to wear next? Who knows. I didn't get round to working on my 1960s top much on my week off – the anxiety tends to get in the way of me doing things; I struggle to make decisions or be proactive when I'm bad, I just react to things rather than making things happen. But I did pick up my knitting again, which was good. Hopefully I'll have my friend's cardi finished in the next couple of weeks, and then I'm going to knit myself something 60s.
I did go out to Bristol to buy chillies (Otomi is the best place to buy specific unusual Mexican ones), and to see my friend, and spotted this amazing old cinema while I was there - it's now a bar. That tower is pretty spectacular. It was the wrong time of day for poking round inside, otherwise I'd have had a look to see if anything of the original picture house remained. In case you're wondering why it's called 'Whiteladies Picture House', it's because it's on Whiteladies Road, not because it was reserved for caucasian women!
Ziggy and Pippin loved having us at home. They seemed to spend most of the week up trees yammering at a magpie. I think it likes teasing them, because it keeps coming back to the garden. They're able to climb pretty high, but as soon as they get close to the magpie it flies to a different branch. Toerags.

Anyway, hopefully normal service will now resume. I'm now going to go and read your blog and see what you've been up to...

  1. Smart dress! It sounds like you are doing well with your healthy habits, and it's a bonus that they help with the anxiety. I love having a few days at home to Potter, I've done just that since returning from Spain!

    1. Pottering is fab. It's so nice to feel like you've got your everyday life in order, isn't it? I'm planning to hit the gym again tonight. I've a work photo shoot at the end of the month, and I'll still look like crud for that, but hopefully *next* time there's a team shoot I'll be in better shape.

  2. So recognizable! I am the eternal worrywort and seem to be going through a particularly bad phase at the moment. Well done on getting back into that Kinky Melon dress, that must be really encouraging. In spite of it being 1970s, it looks like a real Mim kind of dress to me! xxx

    1. I think it's the 'cleanness' of it. I've got quite a minimalist approach to things - very few people I know who are into vintage share that!

  3. Sorry you've been having a rough time with the anxiety-it must be awful. I am imagining the magpie taunting the kittens, "Hey go inside and grab me a ball of wool, dummy!" Birds can be such sh**heads.

    1. I get quite paranoid, which is just the pits as I then feel like everyone I know secretly hates me. Augh. Still, kicking its butt with exercise now...

The magpie keeps coming back, so I think it's amusing itself. I just hope Pippin doesn't manage to grab it - I expect she'd be so startled at her success she'd fall out of the tree.

  4. Awww! look at that adorable little urchin! Ours have been absolute beasts lately, I had to rescue a poor robin from their evil clutches - luckily it was shocked rather than injured.
I'm sorry that the anxiety issues have reared its ugly head. Good to hear that a relaxed week of pottering, more considered eating and a social media break have helped you get back on track.
The Global dress looks great on you, so crisp and cool and, as I commented on IG, it really does show off your waist well. xxx

    1. We have taken a mouse and two slow worms off them (none dead), so they're making their way through the local wildlife. Toerags.

The anxiety's subsiding; I'm determined to keep going to the gym so I can work it off. And hopefully work my way into my nice dresses at the same time. At least I'm aware of it as a health problem and can take steps to minimise it before it gets out of hand.

  5. I've just had a magpie crash in to my kitchen window startling me no end!

I love your shirt dress; so classic and elegant. Glad you enjoyed your week off and got back to your knitting - I 've had a bit of a lull on the crochet front (too busy reading) but Ineed to get on with it.

    The cinema is so cool.

    The moggies are so sweet!

  6. Love that shirtdress on you!
Pottering & mindfulness & avoid social media = definite reduction in anxiety.
Toerags are probably less anxious with mum & dad home too ;)

  7. Mim, you look gorgeous in your lovely dress. The 70's suit you. It is very nice. I am sorry to hear that you have been a bit stressed. It is so hard to function with anxiety so complete kudos for being so proactive and getting stuff done.
What a nice building that cinema is. I am glad that they didn't just pull it down like so many others. I love your cats. They are so cute and I can imagine how much they enjoyed having you and Mr Robot home to spoil them. Xx
