Shiny new 60s shoes

It's no secret that I wear a lot of navy. I keep trying to tear myself away from it, but to little avail. I've got a gorgeous navy bag that Goody gave me, and for ages I've been looking for a nice pair of navy shoes. Maybe it's because I was looking in winter, but I could not find a pair I liked. (Admittedly my options were limited because I have wide feet.) Anyway, in keeping with my theory that if you don't get what you want, it's because life is about to send you something you're really going to want, a few weeks back I discovered Modshoes, and then they released their spring/summer 18 range with these beauties in. Perfect.

In case you're wondering about the fit, the site says they're normal to wide, and I can just get my feet into them - they're leather, so should stretch to fit eventually. My guess is that they're a D-E fitting. I usually wear EE, but can wear Es with a bit of breaking in.

These shoes will look fantastic with most of my summer clothes, so I may decide to be brave and do an outfit post for you at some point. The same style is also available in a bright blue that looks like it'd match the bag Cate gave me, so who knows – perhaps by the end of the summer I'll own two pairs. (The 'Pattie' style in purple suede is utterly fantastic, but I own nothing at all that they could go with.)

Oh, and that fabric they're resting on? It's a remnant I'd bought to make a second version of the Butterick 60s top pattern with, once I'd done the full bust adjustment. Which I managed! I'm a little taken back by the depth of the dart and might try french seaming it rather than leaving the whole thing flapping.

Unfortunately the remnant was about 10cm too short for me to fit the main pattern pieces on, so I'm going to need another bit of fabric to make the top. (Should I live a little and not buy a remnant this time, splash out on something straight off the bolt?) Still, if this works, it'll be Full Steam Ahead to make the final version from my lovely vintage fabric during my week off in May. And that will go perfectly with those lovely shoes.

  1. My friend Tina (Babouskha Vintage) is obsessed with Modshoes! I love your choice, they're so you! I'm liking the sound of the purple ones. Purple goes with everything.
Your pattern adjusting looks very professional. I'd be inclined just to go for it and use the fabric. Good luck! xxx

    2. I'd end up with a crop top if I used the fabric I've got, and ain't no-one got the appetite for that big a muffin ;-)

  2. Those shoes are fantastic. I'm very tempted to get myself a pair. I already had a peek at the Modshoes website, and have been drooling over one or two pairs ... Yes, please, to the outfit photos! Your pattern adjustment looks very complicated to me. Such a shame the remnant's too short, as I'm loving the fabric. xxx

    1. I've shied away from outfit photos for a while because I'm so fat I can't get into anything nice. But perhaps if I make my own nice things to fit all that will change. Or maybe all the salads I've been eating will have an effect. (I feel better, I'm just not getting any thinner!)

  3. Both your shoes and your fabric are really gorgeous. I had never heard of Modshoes but just had a look on their website. The ones that they sell are all stunning, even the men's ones. Black Chelsea boots! I am having a moment!

Your FBA looks great. Did you catch the CSC article on breaking up big darts? Could you add a strip of plain fabric along the bottom of your top to lengthen it? Or why not hit up the chazzas and grab an old duvet cover or sheet and make a toile up. I do that and you can always use the fabric for something else (pocket bags, etc.) when you are done. You get a lot of fabric for very little. Your bags sound lovely. Xx

  4. Oooh, the strip idea is a good one. I'm thinking of this as a 'functional toile'; I'm making it to test the adjustments but hoping to get something wearable.

I haven't seen the article on breaking up big darts - I'll go and check it out.

  5. And why wouldn't you love navy? It looks absolutely fab on you!
The Pattie looks gorgeous! (Does suede do well on the soggy, boggy UK though?)

  6. Brilliant shoes! I have wide feet too but no idea what width they are...

I'm with Vix, purple goes with everything almost. It certainly goes with navy and you said you have a lot of navy...

The sewing looks so professional and what lovely material that is.

  7. Great shoes-and they look like they'll be comfortable to wear. A fabric like that will be useful for something like a contrast collar or pockets so it will still be worth having bought. Personally, I'd go for the crop top and screw anyone that didn't like it, but you could also trim the bottom with fringe to add a few inches length.
