Birthday outfit post

So, this is what 42 looks like. Or, it did on Friday.

Not much different to 41, eh? I like having birthdays, simply because people spoil me rotten. Mr Robot has, on occasion, told me I'm a lot like Queenie from Blackadder, and I dispute this on several fronts, not the least of which is that I'm definitely more like Nursie. On the plus side, his assumption that I am like Queenie at least means he's expecting me to bellow WHERE'S MY PRESSIE? and so buys me heaps of gifts to placate me.

I won't cut his head off today...

Here I am in a lovely little tapas bar, chimping away at my phone while his nibs was wandering around outside having a vape. You can read about the tapas bar over on Greedybots.

The dress was one of my birthday presents, a 1940s Shirt Dress from House of Foxy. I loved the navy Hostess Dress he gave me for Christmas, so he went back and got me a different style dress in green. It fits a little tighter than the Hostess Dress, but the fabric has some stretch so that wasn't a problem. (Yes, I have resumed doing my morning walks!) It's got shoulder pads, which I'm really not used to but did give it a lovely line, and a tie belt.

I got lots of other lovely things - mainly vouchers, but some actual presents. My friend Marian sent me a Hotel Chocolat cookbook, which is intriguing. It even has a recipe for bacon and chocolate spread, though I'll probably be a wuss and start off by making brownies. Here are the other things I got from my husband. The CDs are ones that were recommended in the comments on my recent review of Caro Emerald's last CD. The hedgehog card is garden centre vouchers; I'm thinking of getting myself some more blueberry bushes or raspberry canes.

The things that look like bonbons are actually perfume samples from 4160 Tuesdays, a niche perfume house. I'd wanted to try one of theirs, Lady Rose Lion (Monkey Unicorn) for a while so Pete got me the 'Director's Cut' sample set, containing seven of their most unusual perfumes. I love trying perfumes, and for me as much artistry can go into creating one as goes into a painting or piece of music, but an awful lot of people never really think about them. They wouldn't spend their whole life listening to nothing but elevator music, but they'll happily subject their nose to the same sort of blandness. Not me. I'd rather smell something awful but interesting than face a life of blandly boring laundry detergent fragrances. So far Lady Rose Lion (Monkey Unicorn) is my favourite; Evil Max is quite dark and woody and not at all the cherry-fest I'd expected, while Who Knew? is far heavier on the tea notes than rose. The copy on 4160 Tuesdays' website is quite twee, so the darkness of the fragrances was a pleasant surprise.

The robot earrings are actually from the kittens; they don't get much pocket money so they only buy little presents. But they do have very good taste.

I had a fun birthday. Roll on the next one!

    1. Thank you!

They're surprisingly good at shopping for tiny cats with no pockets...

  2. Oh I am so glad you had a wonderful birthday, I was thinking of you - and what a lovely dress! Good choice from Mr Robot. Your hair looks especially gorgeous against the green. I will have to investigate that perfume house, I'm intrigued by the bizarre names! xx

    1. I love the fact that she creates things with stories in mind, and for her own pleasure - too many of the big names work with a couple of aromachemical companies and a handful of famous noses, all working to strict profit briefs, and the results are generally mediocre. Niche houses that do things to suit themselves generally produce more interesting scents. Ormonde Jayne is one of my favourites, they haven't made a perfume I don't like.

  3. Happy Birthday, and many, many, many more. You look absolutely beautiful, happy, and dazzling in your emerald dress.

I'd been curious about some of those perfumes, so I'm always happy to hear good things from a fellow perfume obsessive.

Hmmm, someone needs to train our goldfish to pick out presents-he's been forgetting. Your kittens did well.

    1. They're interesting perfumes, but the more I wear, the more I'm starting to feel unconvinced. Lady Rose Lion was great, but a couple of the others feel - dare I say it? - like a posh version of BPAL! But I haven't worn that many properly yet, and this sample set is their most unusual fragrances, so I'll probably try another sample set before coming to a conclusion.

  4. Where's my present! Got to love a bit of Queenie! 42 eh? Happy birthday Mim. Love the green dress, especially with your amazing red hair. Tapas is always good. Perfume sounds intriguing. My very favourite (eau de gucci) was discontinued some years ago, so I have to eke my one remaining bottle out. Xxx

    1. You can still turn up bottles of that on eBay - I'd get a couple and lay them down for posterity.

    1. Thank you! The dress is a scootch tight at the mo, but I've restarted my morning walks. (I'm going for a thyroid test later in March too, as my weight is still going up, among other symptoms that could be thyroid-related.)

I suppose their birthday is next so we'll probably buy them a chicken breast when they turn one. No candle, as they'd chew it up.

    1. Thank you!

Yeah, I'm not massively 1940s in style, but I'll happily take anything from HoF from any era.

  12. Happy birthday, Mim - you look particularly beautiful in green! Some fab presents, but you've made me think that I need to have words with my cats - the stingy sods never buy me anything! Xxx

  13. Joyful birthday wishes, dear Mim! I did a double take when you said that you're 42. You look so much younger to me. I just hope I look a fraction as youthful myself when I reach that age (I'm a little over half a decade away from that point right now).

What fantastic presents! Aren't THOF's frocks incredible? I've been living in the one I received from them this winter. It's my first, but I sincerely hope not last, garment from this great UK company.

I hope that your year ahead rocks on countless fronts!

    ♥ Jessica

  15. You look fabulous! That green looks spectacular next to your hair.

The kittens do have good taste! My mother used to tell my sister her cat would take her purse and go to the end of the street, catch the bus and go to town for her birthday gift! xxx
