Agent Carter is returning!

If you're in the UK, the new series of Agent Carter is going to start on FOX soon – the first episode of series two will air on the 28th of January at 9pm. (If you're in the US, sorry, it's already started!) I've been steadfastly avoiding spoilers for this series, but do know it's set in LA, whereas the first one was set in New York, and the year is now 1947. In that classic fictional way, most of the characters seem to have crossed the country along with Peggy Carter, so hers won't be the only familiar face. As you can see in the shot from the trailer, Jarvis is there too.

Even if you're not into comics and think the action-heavy storylines might not be your thing, I recommend watching for the costumes. Designer Giovanna Melton really puts her all into them. She'd designed for 'straight' 1940s dramas before this, and so the outfits do look good. There's not a duff costume in the show, and it's a programme that could inspire the chaps too. Peggy's cobalt skirt suit with plain white blouse and red fedora-type hat seems to have become the iconic look, and apparently loads of people have taken to cosplaying her at comic and SF cons in the US. I'm wondering if the LA setting will mean more summery frocks for our Peg in series two, though I hope she doesn't abandon the suits altogether. Agent Carter makes skirt suits look chic – and she might be the only woman on telly to do that regularly right now. Even if Peggy does adopt a more casual style, I'm looking forward to seeing what costumes Melton comes up with as the New Look has its impact on global fashion in future series.

Talking of the New Look, another just-after-the-war programme of interest is The Collection. This series set at a French couture house after the Occupation is now being filmed and promises glamour galore, though as it's a collaboration between BBC Worldwide and Amazon Prime, I expect British viewers will have to wait to see it until after it's been on Amazon Prime – that's been the case with Ripper Street, series four of which is on there right now but I'm guessing won't come to telly till this autumn at the earliest. We've also got Peaky Blinders to look forward to; series three of that will most likely air in April.

Anyone else excited about Agent Carter? Or watching Gotham, for that matter? I know it's not vintage, but Gotham certainly is very noir. (And Sean Pertwee is a guilty pleasure of mine...)

  1. Really enjoyed season 1 of Agent Carter so really looking forward to season 2. Interested to see where series 3 of Peaky Blinders goes, and Gotham? Gotham is just awesome. The tone is fantastic, its timeless, take the computers and mobile phones out of the equation and it could be the 40s, 50s, 60s or 70s!

    1. That really struck me with this week's episode, where the Maniax attacked the police station. A sweep across the room showed plenty of computers, but they didn't stand out massively.

I did like seeing the piles of paperwork all over the desks, too. Mainly 'cos mine is like that, computer or no computer!

    2. We don't have Sky or the such like so have only just got Agent Carter on DVD, I'm very much looking forward to watching.

    3. The computers tend to have old CRT monitors. I think even the mobile phones are a touch old fashioned as well, and yes so much paperwork!

  2. I've just bought Series 1 of Agent Carter on DVD as a belated Christmas present - having never seen an episode but hearing nothing but good things about it (and I really enjoyed the first Captain America film, so hopefully that bodes well!). Looking forward to settling down to watch it (and thanks for keeping things relatively spoiler-free for me!).

I quite enjoyed Gotham for a time but then missed a few episodes and never really got back into it but I agree that it is very noir-ish and a great series that I hope to come back to sometime soon!

    1. If you like Captain America, you'll definitely enjoy it.

The responses to this post are interesting - people definitely fall into the 'love comic-book adaptations' and 'definitely not!' camps.

  3. I gave up with Agent Carter and Gotham as neither really held my interest but I couldn't tell you why. I think I desperately wanted them to be better than they actually were. The costumes, however, were gorgeous in Agent Carter and I did enjoy swooning over them.

The Collection sounds interesting though and very much my kind of thing. I will definitely keep an eye out for that one!

    1. I guess it's a comic-book thing. Some people like that (I deffo do!) and others aren't as keen. I'm always surprised when my husband likes films/telly programmes based on comics as he doesn't like the comics themselves.

  4. I tried my hardest to get into Agent Carter, but the story just didn't hook me. Perhaps I'll give it another go, if just for the costumes! I do love what the show has done for little Besame Cosmetics, seems no one can get enough of their Red Velvet lippy after Agent Carter hit the airwaves, and rightfully so, it's a gorgeous lipstick.

    1. Heh, just look for the costumes on Pinterest if you don't like the show! Sometimes a programme just doesn't hook a person - everyone raved about Jessica Jones, which didn't grab me at all.

  5. Never seen "Agent Carter" or "Gotham" for that matter but I do appreciate a bit of costume porn. I will have to keep a look out for it. Xx

    1. Gotham's easy to catch as that's on 5; Agent Carter is on FOX so it depends on what your TV access is (being square-eyed, I have all the cable I can eat...)

  6. I don't have Fox but I do really want to watch Agent Carter, mostly for the fashion! I will have to get the dvd. I can't wait for the new series of Peaky Blinders, I just love that programme!

    1. It's ace, isn't it? I'm surprised it's not more popular.

Agent Carter is lightweight but entertaining. I enjoy it, though I'm not going to pretend it's deep or challenging!

  7. Would you believe it, though I know about this show, I haven't seen Agent Carter yet. We don't have cable (by choice; we ditched it a few years ago as we felt we didn't watch new enough TV to just the cost), so often I have to wait to see things on Netflix. Not sure if it's there yet, but I really should look into it. Thanks for the reminder to do so!

*PS* Speaking of Agent Carter, I occasionally get told I look like her (my clothes and makeup, I'm sure, as I think the resemble ends there) - most recently a couple of weeks ago by a male employee at Costco.

    1. It's definitely not the hair as hers is dark! But a splendid compliment nonetheless.
