Hair refresher

Gosh, I have been a bad blogger again... but I didn't manage to talk to you till the 16th in July, so at least I'm a little more on top of things in August. I'm feeling a little like I'm blogging the 'wrong' things, too much me and not enough other stuff, though when I set the Robot up the point was to talk about things I like and so I deliberately made the subject matter very broad. I just don't seem to blog as much retro stuff nowadays.

That said, I'm still wearing old tat, and still listening to old tunes, and still watching old films, even if my day job is mostly new games. I am currently pondering whether to get rid of some of my winter clothes – now I'm sewing more my style is definitely moving firmly into the 60s, so I'm not sure I will wear my woolly skirts as much. I think I'll hang onto them till the cold weather has set in, at least – a prolonged spell of icy weather might have me longing for something snuggly round my knees, or a session watching a few films noir might rekindle my desire to dress a bit 40s. Not that my hair will help now. It's properly in the 60s.

Yup, that's a fringe!

I was getting bored of my hair and had a fringe chopped into it. I'd been looking at old photos of Jean Shrimpton, and while I knew a mere haircut wasn't going to cut off 20 years and four stone, I decided to get the fringe anyway. And I like it! It looked a bit wiggy straight out of the salon, but by the following day had much more of the Shrimpton vibe.

Today I got to see what the whole lot would look like once it had been rained on – a bit wilder than the Shrimpton look, but not awful. All that effort with a brush and the dryer for nothing. The black trousers and velvet jacket are the result of some truly atrocious weather. We've gone from a heatwave to a persistent downpour. (We need Ann to come on holiday again and bring the sunshine back!)
I'm no stranger to doing daft things with my hair. A chap who did work experience with me 15 years ago found the photos when he was clearing out things the other day, and sent me this – so here for you is 30-year-old Mim with blue hair. A fringe is rather less drastic, and I learned one lesson: it always grows back, so have some fun with it!
I hope you're having fun, with hair or anything else!

  1. Oh, I LOVE the blue hair, and you look very saucy with your fringe. I had purple hair (like, deep violet purple) for about 3-4 years, and have just grown my natural grey out...but I'm feeling the itch to go lavender (again) soon. I have had fringe/bangs (as we say in Canada) off and on for my whole life.

Eh, don't worry about your content - write what you want to write about! I like hearing about your hair, your pub crawls, whatever you want to write about. :) Thank you - as always! - for the lovely comments, Mim. They give me a smile.

    1. Thank you!

I keep waiting for my hair to go grey so I can have fun with pastels, but it's steadfastly refusing to change colour! Bleaching it for the blue was a nightmare - I'd feel my scalp fizzing.

  2. Write about yourself-it is the subject you know best! I do really love your haircut. Blue hair is fun too. Hope you get a bit more summer as August is no time for velvet no matter how goth your soul ;)

    1. Yeah, I want more summer so my tomatoes ripen.

The rained-on hair looks a bit 'shorter Stevie Nicks'. Bet she wears velvet all year round...

  3. A fringe really suits you, Mim - unlike me, who ends up looking like a serial killer. Looking at that blue hair photo, you've always had fantastic hair.
I'm loving your 1960s style shift, you radiate confidence and look so good. Definitely don't get rid of your winter threads until we're halfway through the season, you just never know.
Yes, Ann & Jos need to come back, I want some heat and sunshine. xxx

    1. I was worried that a fringe would emphasise my current roundness, but as I've lost weight my cheekbones have re-emerged.

I think I'm just a bit bored with the earlier vintage right now. Not the real thing, not the films or the music or real films, but the whole pinupification of it, the whole IG thing where nobody's having fun, they're just focussed on nothing but clothes and looks. I'll probably still enjoy wearing my 30s-40s clothes when winter rolls round.

    2. I know what you mean, that early vintage style often looks very contrived and uncomfortable. I want vintage that can withstand running for a bus or wearing to Spoons! xxx

  4. It seems I have no choice and have to book another UK trip! Only, there hasn't been much sun here this past week either. I absolutely love your new haircut, and I think the fringe really suits you. Perfect for that 1960s look you are after. And you've absolutely got killer cheekbones. Just wow! Love that photo of your younger self with the blue hair. Aubergine is the most adventurous I've ever been, colour-wise. xxx

  5. The weather has been atrocious hasn't it? I was in a Crimplene jacket this week for warmth, wasn't expecting to wear it until Autumn! I am SO glad you are now happy with your hair, it's fab. Love the blue hair too, you have been quite experimental. I love reading about whatever you choose to write about xx

  6. Loving the very 60s swoopy bangs on you!
The rained on look is rather fetching also.
I've experimentimg with lavender/ash toner on my platinum blonde locks - looked a bit more Mrs Slocum than I care to admit.

  7. Your fringe is fab I love it! (The blue hair is awesome too I always wanted to try different colours but my hair was so fucked I didn't dare for fear of it all falling out!) I think what you wear should be an ever evolving journey but yes probably wise to wait for the cold weather before you get rid of all the woolies. Urgh this weather is miserable, it's like autumn.
